Deadwood Deadmen Tell Tales
(NOTE: I count the author as a friend. Notwithstanding that lapse, he has written a very fine little book here.)
Bill Markley usually writes carefully researched articles about history, especially old west history. This is when he is not writing environmental reports for the State of South Dakota. In DEADWOOD DEADMEN he has an opportunity to clothe the dry bones of history with a bit of flesh - Some of it quite attractive by all reports!
We all know that Wild Bill was murdered in Deadwood SD, but why? Rest assured Wild Bill is not the only soul who died with his boots on and lies in the Mount Moriah Cemetery. Were there other murders in that far from peaceful little frontier gold rush town? Almost every day and two on Sunday. This "whodunit" is a bit of a "whytheydunit" and builds a remarkable feeling of suspense as we follow an intrepid fictional reporter from a real life "back east" newspaper as he tracks down a crime syndicate on the prairie and finds romance, adventure, serious injury along the way.
No spoiler here but did you know the gold rush miners invented the wave back in the 1800's? Check out "Oh Joe!" The colorful sidelights are researched and accurate in this tale. Want a severed head along with breakfast? How about meeting an oriental gentleman and beautiful princess? They're all here and Calamity Jane will do her best to keep order while protecting the working ladies of Deadwood, Dakota Territory. OGTHH
Authentic History
I love this book as it takes a moment in history that has been seen by us from TV and Movies etc, Bill Markley takes us back to that time just as it was, down to the stools used instead of chairs..Wonderful character studies in some famous folks that were there at the time. Bill goes into all aspects of the society there from Chinese, to Indians, to actual characters like Calamity Jane and California Joe. We can visit all important places in town, and introduces us to the smells and sounds of the times in the Gold mine town. He also keeps the reader on edge with a nice detective story as well. I recommend this book to all interested in the true West, and how it was back then.
My First Western - Won't Be My Last
please understand I'm biased - I've known the author since 1st grade. This is actually the 1st western I've ever read - well at least as an adult. I found the historical detail fascinating and intriguing, the character development complete and the ending leaving an opening for the next in this series which I look forward to reading. I would think if you're into westerns this is one to add to your reading list.
History brought to life.
Had as much fun reading this as Bill must have had researching and writing. Love history stories, and this one helped me realize how many people pass through and contribute to history and are never known or remembered.
