Publisher's Summary:
"Quo Vadis" is a historical novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz. It tells of a love between a young Christian woman and a Roman patrician in Rome, under the rule of emperor Nero, c. AD 64. The main characters is Marcus Vinicius, a military tribune and Roman patrician who recently returned to Rome. On his arrival, he meets and falls in love with Ligia. He seeks the counsel of his uncle Petronius to find a way to possess her.
Ligia, the daughter of a deceased king of a barbarian tribe, is technically a hostage of the Senate and people of Rome, and was forgotten years ago by her own people. A great beauty, she has converted to Christianity, but her religion is originally unknown to Marcus.
Gaius Petronius, former governor of Bithynia, is a member of Nero's court who uses his wit to flatter and mock him at the same time. Somewhat amoral and a bit lazy, he tries to help his nephew, but his cunning plan is thwarted by Ligia's Christian friends. Nero and the apostles Peter and Paul also appear.
Henryk Sienkiewicz (1846-1916) was a Polish journalist, novelist and winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. He is best remembered for his internationally known best-seller "Quo Vadis".

Beautifully written; eloquent language that has been lost today ...
A classic written in late 19th century style. Beautifully written; eloquent language that has been lost today but could do with removal of the "thee's and thou's" which today's younger generation is not familiar with and might find off putting.
A truly great book!!
I believed that the author received the Nobel prize for this work and I can sure see why. The book focuses on Christianity, Nero around the time this bi-polar nut case tried to burn down Rome, which is historically accurate. It shows in depth the psychological suffering of the early christians and the book just sucks you in. It also reminds me of Hitler and other narcissistic leaders and the level of suffering they create around them. This truly a great book, a great translation and free!!
Second time I have read this book
A classic tale of Nero, St. Peter ,St. Paul and the rise of Christianity. Excellent story, very enjoyable.
Made into a Hollywood Movie.
Footprints in the Sand
Top of our list for incredible spiritual books. This will make a Christian out of you if you aren't convinced already.
Quo Vadis Is not Dated
Great suspense in the latter half of the book. It stands out because of its wonderful, if horrifying, description of Nero's orgies and the "blow by blow" description of the Christian persecutions. Also it is a novel of manners in its intimate detail of the lives of both the upper and lower classes of Roman society in the first century.
The strength of Christian belief is obviously the main theme of the novel and could have been presented with more emphasis on Christianity's appeal to the people. This element was there but not really well developed.
