Publisher's Summary:
Dan Ranscombe is clever and good-looking, but he resents the wealth and easy savoir faire of fellow guest Paul Latimer. Surely a shrewd girl like Meg Slater would see through that, wouldn't she? And what about Diana, Paul's beautiful sister; Charles Asher, the Jewish outsider; Madeleine, the children's nanny; and artist Henry Haddon?
As these guests gather at a country house party, none has any inkling that the choices they make will have fateful consequences lasting through the war and beyond.

What is not to like? The characters
I read this book slower than I've ever read a book as I didn't want it to end. What is not to like? The characters, the era and the excitement that goes along with it, the visual imagery of magnificent days long gone. I wanted to wallow in the depths of the book. Caro Fraser's skill at writing enables the reader's imagination to become so absorbed in the story that it is quite disappointing to realize that the reader has a separate life. What a talent.
WWII soap opera
In spite of the formulaic prose and rather soap opera plotting, I found myself pulled into the lives of the characters. The ending definetely leaves this open for a sequel.
Best Book I've Read This Year.
This is the best book I have read all year. The characters are so well developed; they are like friends or family. The story line is classic but not beat to death in the usual fashion. This is a tremendous story. I hope a sequel will tie up a few loose ends as I am concerned about some of the characters. Excellent, excellent, excellent.
They all seem pretty shallow and frivolous
Still trying to make my way through this novel. I'm about 30% through (and have read a couple of different books in between) and can't really connect with any of the characters. They all seem pretty shallow and frivolous. Still giving it a chance.
An excellent read
English Upper Crust young people meet for a week's vacation at family members mansion in 1936. The book follows their lives as they intertwine throughout World War II. There's love and deceit, heroics and family life.
