Dear Mango, Podcast | Episode 5 | I Am Learned Experiences | Clip 4: Running Laps

Listen Later

You are not ahead or behind. You are in a part of the cycle nobody taught you has a name. What goes up must come down. And what has come down finds its way back up.

In episode 5 of Dear Mango, my former coaching client and Dear Mango Reflection Session attendee, Melissa, saw her life across the various quadrants of the Hudson model from when we started our work together to today. She reflects on aspects of her life mapped across multiple stages of change. Instead of feeling overwhelmed she felt permission. The Hudson Cycle of Change and Prochaska's Stages of Change are not linear frameworks. They are mirrors of what you are experiencing. You may have been here before, but you aren’t going backwards. Running laps reflects concepts from Nipsey’s albums, “Victory Lap” and “The Marathon Continues.” Each time you return you bring lessons and it’s an opportunity to shed what no longer serves you.

As first-gen, cycle breakers, and immigrants many of our parents did not have this language. All they were taught was to work. We watched our parents pour everything into survival to the detriment of their health. We are the first ones making sense of cycles our parents never had words for. Naming where you are gives you permission to know where you stand to better understand where you are going. Listen to the full episode.
