Please excuse the morbid theme of this mixtape.
I do not mean to make anyone sad or scare them.
But today is Samhain.
The time of the year when the veil to the dead is at its thinnest, at least according to pagan lore.
In my view this is not a spooky time. Not at all.
I miss a number of dead people so much, that i am more than happy to feel their presence a bit better.
The way many of the people behave, who are still alive, feels much more spooky to me.
Like zombies.
We recently had a lot of death, or looming death, in our family.
In theory, this could bring the rest of us, who are still alive, closer together.
Not so in this constellation.
Abolish this family.
LOL, okay, maybe all families.
Most of my favorite people, okay three out of four, are dead.
I often wonder, if they would hate me as well, if they were alive today.
Of course this is futile speculation.
Or maybe an attempt to curb my para-social infatuation with them.
I am so grateful for the one among my favorite people, who is alive.
And my best friend.
I am so sorry that she has to put up with me.
In my helplessness i create these mixtapes for her, even though she does not listen to music that much.
What an idiot i am, see?
I am convinced, that i will only find peace in death.
But i continue to be fucking scared of dying.
Norbert Elias once remarked, “death is the problem of the living”.
Zygmunt Bauman, in his book “Mortality, Immortality and Other Life Strategies”, defines death, and interestingly also immortality, as social constructs.
Hence the title of this mixtape.
In abstraction death is a social construct.
In practicality it scares the living crap out of me.
Sorry for all this noise.
The light at the end of the tunnel
Sometimes it takes just one or two songs that motivate me into creating a new mixtape.
This time around these were the Orbital remix of The Cure and the Public Enemy track on ageism.
Everything else started to weave itself around it.
The mix is surprisingly bouncy considering the theme.
