"Deathworld" (1960) is a science fiction novel about a gambler, by Harry Harrison.
Excerpt:
Some planet in the galaxy must - by definition - be the toughest, meanest, nastiest of all. If Pyrrus wasn't it... it was an awfully good approximation! JASON dinALT sprawled in soft luxury on the couch, a large frosty stein held limply in one hand. His other hand rested casually on a pillow. The gun behind the pillow was within easy reach of his fingers. In his line of work he never took chances. It was all highly suspicious. Jason didn't know a soul on this planet. Yet the card sent by service tube from the hotel desk had read: Kerk Pyrrus would like to see Jason dinAlt. Blunt and to the point.

... and when I read them again a lot of good memories came back
I originally read these stories back in school and when I read them again a lot of good memories came back. The author has a very vivid imagination and Jason's character is great. He is cunning, crafty and it's amazing how he gets into and ouf trouble. It's a great read considering that the book was written in the 60's and now a lot of the things mentioned do actually exist. I recommend this book.
Great Old-Fashioned SF
A professional gambler with psychic powers explores and then solves the social problems of a society that evolved on a world that tries to kill them at every opportunity.
I bought Deathworld expecting something fun, exiting, and not too challenging. And Deathworld IS fun. It's also deeper than you might think from the synopsis. There is real metaphorical meaning here. I won't give it away, but i think it is no coincidence this book was so popular in the USSR.
Deathworld does leave something to desire in the realm of character development and motivation. The setup isn't convincing, but once you get through the first chapter the story quickly picks up speed and the fun begins. From there it's an exiting ride, filled with big guns, monsters, and explosions. And when the whole thing is over, you've actually learned something useful. Well worth reading.
Good Read
Harrison is a good storyteller. After Deathworld, I read Deathworld 2. I got a copy of Deathworld 3 - next on my list. I finished Harrison's Make Room, Make Room last evening. Excellent read there. Three Harrison books in a week! Easy 4-stars.
Gravity pulls you in.
This is a great story from the first page all the way to the last. Well thought out and superbly crafted with many twists that engage your emotions and your mind.
Favorite Harrison book
This is my favorite Harrison book. I have read it several times. I realise that the book is old, and some of tech is dated. I see many reviews of older books and they point this out, I find that odd. The writing is good and the story is solid. Classic sci-fi is just that classic, and should be judged for what it is. Good is good no matter when it was wrote.
