thoughtfully written sci-fi with a soul

thoroughly enjoyed this well written sci-fi story. it's extremely efficient in that it has a limited cast and very few locations. it drives a strong plot through the eyes of a flawed protagonist which slowly reveals the mystery.

I will go on to read Newman's back catalogue on the strength of this

I originally read these stories back in school and when I read them again a lot of good memories came back. The author has a very vivid imagination and Jason's character is great. He is cunning, crafty and it's amazing how he gets into and ouf trouble. It's a great read considering that the book was written in the 60's and now a lot of the things mentioned do actually exist. I recommend this book.

Great Old-Fashioned SF

A professional gambler with psychic powers explores and then solves the social problems of a society that evolved on a world that tries to kill them at every opportunity.

I bought Deathworld expecting something fun, exiting, and not too challenging. And Deathworld IS fun. It's also deeper than you might think from the synopsis. There is real metaphorical meaning here. I won't give it away, but i think it is no coincidence this book was so popular in the USSR.

Deathworld does leave something to desire in the realm of character development and motivation. The setup isn't convincing, but once you get through the first chapter the story quickly picks up speed and the fun begins. From there it's an exiting ride, filled with big guns, monsters, and explosions. And when the whole thing is over, you've actually learned something useful. Well worth reading.

Good Read

Harrison is a good storyteller. After Deathworld, I read Deathworld 2. I got a copy of Deathworld 3 - next on my list. I finished Harrison's Make Room, Make Room last evening. Excellent read there. Three Harrison books in a week! Easy 4-stars.

Gravity pulls you in.

This is a great story from the first page all the way to the last. Well thought out and superbly crafted with many twists that engage your emotions and your mind.

Favorite Harrison book

This is my favorite Harrison book. I have read it several times. I realise that the book is old, and some of tech is dated. I see many reviews of older books and they point this out, I find that odd. The writing is good and the story is solid. Classic sci-fi is just that classic, and should be judged for what it is. Good is good no matter when it was wrote.

Bring Lauren Holladay back as narrator!

I am a huge fan of John Thornton's books, but this is the last one I am going to waste my money on, not because the story isn't good. The narrator's are terrible! I've listened to all of the books in this series up to this one and, with the exception of Lauren Holladay (books three and four), the readers sound amateurish, there is noise in the audio and sentences repeated. I would suggest that the publishers find performers who are actual professionals. As much as I like Mr. Thornton's work, he has lost me because of his narrators. I'm a member of a Sci Fi audio book group (we suggest good Sci Fi to read or listen to). I will be warning them not to waste their money or credit on this series unless it's only for book 3 or 4... which won't make much sense if they don't hear the whole series. It's important for people listening with ear buds that there isn't crackling noise and irritating voices.

It's a shame that such a good writer doesn't seem to care what his audio books sound like.

good read, fascinating futuristic concepts and an interesting play on the VR tech we use today. from the moment you'll walk into Malcolm's bedroom .... you'll be hooked and will want to go deeper into 2600 ... Michigan :)

and the story only gets better and better as you get deeper into the world of Ethos.

My first touch to Polity universe

I started reading the books in chronological order (from goodreads.com) so this was my first touch on the Polity universe even though this seems to be one of the latest books from the writer.

Some mixed feelings here, partly it felt like this book was done to set up a scene, attention was paid to characters that were introduced but never again seen. Luckily partly this book told an interesting tale.

The reader did not quite succeed here, there were no pauses or other indications when point of view changed. This created confusion at the beginning but less so near the 50% mark.

At the moment, I'm not yet sure if I continue reading the Polity books. Probably.

Great story -super slow and boring narration

Great hard sci-fi but I kept checking to see if the speed was set to 75%. The slow boring narration detracts from the pace and excitement of the story. Becomes much better if listen to at 125% speed

Typical Asher

Always enjoy Neal Ashers work, narration was somewhat stilted but rescued by the engaging plot.
