In this clip from the Live broadcast of Moccasin Tracks, we feature an interview with Kerry Wood, Abenaki basketmaker.  Kerry tells us the story of how Corn Husk Doll With No Face was inspired and created with the help of her Abenaki community.  She updates us on the condition of the Black Ash Trees and  talks about her Indigenous Worldview since she began her language journey.  Many thanks to Kerry for sharing her story.

"Kerry Wood/Kalli Abazi is a member of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk Abenaki Nation.  In 2016 she completed a 3-year apprenticeship program with Jeanne Brink through the Vermont Folklife Center Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program for making traditional Black Ash and Sweetgrass baskets.  Elvine Obomsawin, Kerry’s Great-Grandmother, and her family made and sold baskets to tourists in Vermont in the early to mid-1900’s.  Jeanne is also Kerry’s cousin.  Hearing the stories from their Obomsawin family heritage while learning basket making connected Kerry to her Abenaki heritage.  Kerry continues to make traditional baskets and has also been learning Alnôbaôdwawôgan, the Abenaki language.   Language is culture! Alnôbaôdwawôgan is an endangered language with few fluent speakers remaining.  Kerry serves as Associate Director for the Middlebury College School of Abenaki, an immersion language program at Middlebury College.  She is also a Physical Therapist caring for people at the inpatient hospital of the University of Vermont Medical Center."

MoccasinIn this podcast we feature an interview with Grandmother Carole who talks to us by way of internet telephone.  She speaks on the subject of "Healing The Human To Water Connection" and "Community" and tells about a dream she had making a water wheel, a vehicle for prayer.  Praying for the water creates world peace, she says.

Bringing The Indigenous Voice On The Airwaves With Vince Fontaine 

In this edition of Moccasin Tracks we converse with Vince Fontaine, founder of Eagle and Hawk and Indigenous Rock Band Indian City based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He tells us the stories behind the songs and we broadcast with you songs of Eagle and Hawk.

Eagle & Hawk is a Canadian roots-rock band based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Bringing energy, spirit, and commitment to the stage, the band delivers catchy and infectious songs that draw in a wide demographic of Indigenous and non-Indigenous music fans and social justice advocates alike. Their signature style of lyrics, hooks and melodies often peeks through the lens of Indigenous stories, voices and imagery earning them recognition across Canada. With multiple music award nominations and wins across North America, Eagle & Hawk has been a part of the country's musical fabric for more than 22 years. Their latest record, Liberty,takes a pointed look societal issues including, liberty, freedom, the rise and presence of women in society, the great divide and other universal questions of the human experience.In 2019, CBC gave Eagle & Hawk the green light to produce a documentary to share the stories of their two decades in music and solidify the band's musical legacy. Gali Sanchez from the New Hampshire Abenaki Nation brings us his perspectives on the use of Native American imagery for mascots. He is an educator, public speaker, storyteller, musician and gifts us with this interview today on Moccasin Tracks, Nov 15, 2017.

He joins us by phone from his home in Virginia. Continuing to practice a living culture, Gali recently made a wool coat replicating a style from the 1800's that his ancestors might have worn. In this podcast we introduce Moccasin Tracks and interview with Doug Harris(Deputy Officer for Narragansett Indian Tribe Historic Preservation Office)and attorney for the Narragansett Nation and NITHPO in this effort, Anne Marie Garti.

Anne Marie tells us a little about the National Historic Preservation Act and the Federal Energy Regulation Commission (FERC) and reads us some of the legal law. It is thru these legal challenges that the Tribal Historic Preservation Offices can protect the "Manitou Has-suk" or spirit stones. Doug tells us how tribes and towns are entering into MOU (memorandum of understanding) to identify religious,cultural ceremonial sites and petition the agencies for protection of these sites. He is working with other Tribes in the East in this effort and invites state recognized tribes to work with them.

Doug has submitted definitions of these sites to the National Registry of Historic Places. Doug Harris is a preservationist for ceremonial landscapes. His guidance comes from the Elders of his community and he asks us all to, "let the landscape speak for itself". An honor to talk with Anne and Doug. Thank-you for listening.

In this segment of Moccasin Tracks broadcast June 14, 2017 from the campus of the University of Vermont, WRUV FM Burlington we talk to Doug Harris(Deputy Narragansett Indian Tribe Historic Preservation Officer)and attorney for the Narragansett Nation in this effort, Anne Marie Garti.

We talk about the identified Ceremonial Stone Landscape in the path of the Connecticut Transfer Expansion Pipeline (Gas) and the efforts to protect. Doug reminds us of the language we use and how the language of the ancient

ones describe and have more to tell us today. We talk about the NHPA (National Historic Preservation Act) and Doug helps us to understand the perspective of the original peoples. We celebrate the family relationships (cousins) between the peoples and he gifts us with stories relating to place and ceremonies. His responsibility is to avoid adverse effects on the "prayer stones" and continue to teach the youth how to identify these sites so they may continue to protect their sacred sites and spiritual ways.

We talk to Cody Hall on Moccasin Tracks from the Red Warrior Camp at the Sacred Stone Camp on the Treaty Territory of the Lakota Nation. Cody is part of the media team and has been the MC at some of the Rhyme and Rhythm Events on site giving voice to everyone. He gifts us with story and experiences that are part of this collective resistance to the Dakota Access Pipeline. The story is being shared worldwide thru the social media and especially Facebook pages, posts and audio that is collected daily at this peaceful non-violent encampment.
