Debut Buddies

This fortnight, we're joined by sociologist Marc Smith, whose appearance on IT Conversations with Doug Kaye was the subject of this podcast's first episode (First Podcast). Marc generously joins the Buddies (Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate) to talk about the future of social media, and his work to create a brighter, better internet for all. We also play I See What You Did There!

Next week, we're talking about Rankin/Bass's Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)... the FIRST HOLIDAY SPECIAL (or at least the first claymation holiday special)!

"These Buddies were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should..." This episode, Kelly, Chelsea, and Nate make versions of the First Pumpkin Pie, to... varying levels of success. Kelly makes a pie from the 1500s. Nate and Chelsea make one from the 1600s, that's really just a gourd full of custard. It's... food, mostly! Plus, we play I See What You Did There and give you updates with the Mouthguard/MouthGarfield Report! And there's a haunting at Chelsea's!

Buddies again GARFIE BABY!!!! We hate on Mondays and consume lasagna this week while talking about the first Jim Davis-penned Garfield comic strip from 1978. (Did you know that he did two different comics BEFORE Garfield? It's true!) Listen to find out how we stretch 3 panels to an hour and twenty minutes! And, for THE MOUTHGUARD REPORT and I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE...

Next ep... we're making the FIRST PUMPKIN "PIE"! Delicious.

Hold onto your bits, and bring some extra batteries for your DeWalt drill! This week, Chelsea, Nate and Kelly spelunk through the very FIRST CREEPYPASTA online spooky story... TED THE CAVER. We discuss the Angelfire website (which still stands!), the brilliant pacing, a couple of questionable structure choices, and the existential dread of caving in total darkness. Join us for a crash course on little baby internet horror storytelling! (Plus, I See What You Did There!)

Let's get a little spooky by surveying the original Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark book from 1981. Nate, Kelly, and Chelsea discuss the hits and misses in this kid's tome of terror. After all, this book might've been your first exposure to The Hook (about a hook-handed murderer) or High Beams (there's someone in the backseat!!!) or even The Wendigo! How many Debs does this book get? Listen to find out...  AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! (Did we scare you?)

Next time, we're talking about First Spookypasta, specifically "Ted the Caver".

The Buddies are back to talk about the Louds, an upper middle class family from California who let a film crew record their lives and make it into a 12 episode series in 1973. Originally aired on PBS, An American Family is considered the First Reality Show ever. Chelsea, Kelly and Nate dive into the only version of it they could find, the 2011 clip compilation An American Family: Anniversary Edition. We've got Bill, we've got Pat, we've got Lance, we've got Delilah, Grant, Kevin and Michele. But most importantly, we've got our buddies.

Welcome to DEBUT BUDDIES! This is a podcast about firsts, hosted by Chelsea, Kelly, and Nate! This episode, the Debs get down with the FIRST PODCAST, Doug Kaye's IT Conversations, launched in 2003! We couldn't find the first one, so we grabbed the earliest we could find. From February 2004, this is the Marc Smith: Catalyzing Collective Action on the Net episode.

We discuss the early-00s predictions about social media, internet behavior, and even Augmented Reality tech. This is a wild ride. Plus, we play a game, give our Mouthguard Report, and rate the experience. Was early podcasting good? Is this podcast any better?
