"She Is Young, She Is Beautiful, She is Next...She's Living in the Gateway to Hell" The tag line for The Sentinel (1977) gives away the darkest secret of the big budgeted, big release horror film from Michael Winner based on the hit novel from Jeffrey Konvitz. The cast is insane and the effects are from the legendary Dick Smith. The Black Saint and Doc Rotten tackle another groovy horror film from the 1970s.

Decades of Horror 1970s Episode 6 – Squirm (1976)

For The Sentinel, Doc Rotten and The Black Saint are joined by North Carolina writer/directory/fxartist Bill (400 Ways to Kill a Vampire, A Few Brains More) Mulligan to discuss the overlooked classic from 1977. If nothing else, the cast itself in impressive: Chris Sarandon, Cristina Raines, Ava Gardner & Burgess Meredith, with Martin Balsam, John Carradine, Jose Ferrer, Arthur Kennedy, Sylvia Miles, Deborah Raffin, Eli Wallach, Christopher Walken, Jerry Orbach, Beverly D'Angelo, Jeff Goldblum, Tom Berenger, William Hickey. A who's who of Hollywood then and now. The film is also notorious for the controversy surrounding the use of real "freaks" for the finale that spawned protests and discouraging reviews upon its release. Still the film has a horrific and genuinely frightening scene that places it at number 46 on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments (2004).

A double feature special Thanksgiving edition of HNR is coming your way reviewing The Guest (2014) and Starry Eyes (2014), two smaller budget VOD films from up and coming directors with lead roles that introduce star making performances. Dan Stevens stars as David in The Guest and Alex Essoe transforms in Starry Eyes. If for no other reason, these films deserve to be seen for these two actors. Check out the reviews for more compelling pros and cons.

Dave shares the horror news of the week with news about Star Wars Episode VII. Seriously, what else do you need? Jurassic World, maybe. Thomas and The Black Saint share their thoughts about the number one film in the theaters this weekend, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1.

Horror News Radio The Official HorrorNews.Net Podcast Episode 86 – The Guest - Starry Eyes Subscribe – iTunes – Facebook – Stitcher

Writer/Directors Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer deliver their crowd funded, highly reviewed, low budget feature film Starry Eyes which examines a young woman's desire to become a star and the crazy lengths she will go to get what she wants. The intimate script mixes elements of Faust, body horror and slasher film tropes into an interesting but uneven film. Alex Essoe is captivating in the starring role.

HNR favorites Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett follow up their film, You're Next, with The Guest about a mysterious stranger who arrives at the home of a family dealing with the loss of the oldest son who died overseas serving his country. Dan Stevens stars as David who has shocking and horrifying secrets. The film is energetic, exciting and bloody. It may become a cult classic.

Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint complain that the latest Katniss feature, Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, is overly padded and dull. The Black Saint is particularly concerned that splitting the final book into two features is solely a money grab by the studios and may ultimately sour the franchise. Does Thomas agree?

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of a pair of high profile trailers coming out the weekend of Thanksgiving 2014. Krumpas is coming to the big screen from Trick R Treat director, Michael Dougherty. Goosebumps is coming in 2015 and this weeks reveals the first shots of the variety of monsters in the film. The only thing that the grue-crew can agree upon in this week's horror release Jessabelle is that Sarah Snook makes an impression with the character driven horror film set in the deep south. The Black Saint suggests it is better suited for the Lifetime channel finding very little that is scary or interesting while Doc, Vixen and Dave all seem to like the film quite a bit. Sound the bell, it HNR-nite fights!

Matthew McConaughy joins Anne Hathaway and Wes Bentley to explore deep space in hopes to save humanity in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. The Black Saint and Thomas Mariani discuss the film's sound design, spectacular special effects and emotional human drama. Even though it may not be Nolan's best film, Interstellar is still a film to seek out and enjoy.

The Cartoon Network astounds Thomas Mariani and The Black Saint with its 10 episode animated min-series Over the Garden Wall. The vocal talent is extraordinary and the execution is surprisingly emotional and bent. Thomas and The Black Saint recommend the miniseries with The Black Saint suggesting it would make a terrific film with the 10 episode consumed in one showing.

Dave returns to bring you the Horror News of the Week with news of Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead making the leap to cable television with Ash vs. the Evil Dead heading to Starz. The Walking Dead barely slipped by controversy as this week's episode was nearly heavily censored. There is a documentary heading our way about legendary producer Debra Hill.
