  • The Incredible Melting Man (1977) - Decades of Horror 1970s Episode 1

Welcome to the first episode of the Decades of Horror 1970s podcast with your hosts The Black Saint and Doc Rotten. Each month, the show will revisit one of the classic - or not so classic - horror films from the Seventies: b-movies, blockbusters, grindhouse gems and z-grade dreck. It's all about the films that shaped a generation of horror fans and the future of horror films as well.

For the first episode, The Black Saint has chosen the Rick Baker effects spectacle, The Incredible Melting Man from 1977. The movie was billed as "The First New Horror Creature," whatever that means. While Doc admits he walked out of the film back in 1977, The Black Saint loves the film, loves the cheese and all the zany nonsense.

Decades of Horror 1970s Episode 1 – The Incredible Melting Man (1977)

The Incredible Melting Man is a grand example of horror from the 1970s, ambitious, practical effects and out there - striving to reach new ground and make a lasting impression, regardless of how successful it may be at any of those goals. On the special features of the terrific Shout Factory Blu-Ray edition, director William Sachs sighs that most audiences didn't "get" the movie and its message; surprisingly, The Black Saint freely admits he too has no idea what Sachs is talking about with the film, but he still loves all the goofy plot holes and the terrific, gooey effects from legendary artists Rick Baker.

  • Big Bad Wolves - Top 5 Unconventional Revenge Films - Episode 44 Horror News Radio

Big Bad Wolves clobbers the cast of HNR this week leaving them shocked at what they’ve seen. The Israeli film, which topped Quentin Tarantino’s top of 2013 list, is an impressive psychological thriller containing gruesome effects and violence and intense dialog. The film should not be missed.

Thomas continues the theme with the Top 5 of the Week bringing an eclectic group of films comprising the Top 5 Unconventional Revenge Films. He casts asides classics like Deathwish, Kill Bill and I Spit on Your Grave for obscure but incredible films like The Skin I Live In and Takashi Miike’s Audition. Oh, my, you know this is going to be good!

Co-hosts Doc Rotten, Santos (The Black Saint) Ellin Jr., Dave Dreher, Thomas Mariani and Vixen, the voice of reason, return with heavy hearts to tackle Dave’s horror news of the week as Hollywood looses a great, a master and “The Extreme.”

00:02:22 – Big Bad Wolves From Israel comes a vicious little film called Big Bad Wolves that is a real attention getter, for certain. “Bring me the blow torch!” Chills, baby, chills. This film is heavy on the Quentin Tarantino influence which caught the director’s notice prompting him to place the film on his top 10 films of 2013 list. Santos worries that Mr. Tarantino may be blowing smoke in our faces; he is thankful that QT is not and loves the film! In fact so do Thomas, Doc and Vixen. Intense, gruesome and surprisingly funny, Big Bad Wolves is a big hit with the grue-crew.

00:25:53 – Top 5: Unconventional Revenge Films Thomas bring with him an incredible list of films this week banking off the revenge angle found in tonight’s main feature, Big Bad Wolves. He not only takes a look at revenge flick from the past few decades, but he also singles out the most Unconventional Revenge Films from the list. The list includes a film from the Japanese maverick, Takshi Miike, the humbling Audition. It also contains an early film from The Dark Knight and Inception director, Christopher Nolan, the mind altering Memento. Santos slides in one of his favorites from the Eighties, Ms. 45 and Doc questions if The Crow should be included. But it is Thomas’ favorite, The Skin I Live In, that has everyone talking.

    1. The Skin I Live In (2011) – Dir: Pedro Almodovar
    2. Ms. 45 (1981) - Dir: Abel Ferrara
    3. Memento (2000) - Dir: Christopher Nolan
    4. The Crow (1994) - Dir: Alex Proyas
    5. Audition (1999) - Dir: Takashi Miike

00:48:01 - Horror News of the Week for 02/03/2014 Dave Dreher wraps up the show with another titillating round of Horror News of the Week. Sadly, the news starts off with the shocking news of the sudden death of acclaimed actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman. It is an incredibly sad loss which has the HNR crew fondly remember many of the actors past accomplishments in film. Peyton Manning and the Browns continue to put Doc in stitches while Dave shares all the horror icons that appeared in the Radio Shack super bowl commercial. David S. Goyer is returning to horror with the cinematic adaptation of The Breach. In remake news, a modern revision of the Aussie hit, Patrick, is finally coming to the States. And, last but not least, the El Ray network have released a trailer and promotional materials for their TV show, From Dusk Till Dawn, that have definitely caught David’s eye. Woot!

  • Monster Movie Podcast - Episode 64 - Friday the 13th (1980)

Join us this week as we face down one wickedly sick Momma Voorhees in the granddaddy of all slasher films, Friday the 13th (1980). Camp Crystal Lake has attracted a new group of camp counselors to resurrect the grounds long closed after a series of horrific murders and given the nickname Camp Blood. Unbeknownst to them the killer still lurks in the woods and begins killing them off one by one.

Sean S. Cunningham’s simply plotted but intensely paced gory shocker with FX work from Tom Savini changed the face of horror films starting the slasher craze only hinted at from its inspiration, Halloween (1978).

“Kill her, Mommy! Kill her! Don’t let her get away, Mommy! Don’t let her live!”” I won’t, Jason. I won’t!”

Joining Doc on this episode is the co-host of Horror News Radio, the host of Follow the Following fan podcast and the lead news writer for HorrorNews.Net, the one and only Dave Dreher. The two dive right into the details of the classic slasher flick reliving the film’s release, seeing it for the first time, the marketing, the trailer and the magazines that covered it at the time Famous Monsters of Filmland and early issues of Fangoria. Friday the 13th (1980) started a long-running slasher craze with a series of extraordinary effects from the godfather of gore, Tom Savini, who just came of the zombie masterpiece,Dawn of the Dead (1978). The film stars Betsy Palmer, Adrienne King, Harry Crosby, Walt Gorney and a very young Kevin (The Following) Bacon.

After recapping, reviewing and reliving the film, Doc and Dave count down the top 5 kills from the Friday the 13th series.

    1. Kevin Bacon gets an arrow through the neck
    2. Marcie gets a hatchet to the head
    3. Jason dies sliding down the business end of a machete
    4. Jason violently, effortlessly rips a victim off a door frame he is nailed to
    5. Jason slams a victim tucked in a sleeping bag up against a tree
