"I wonder who the real cannibals are." Are there faux cannibals? Join your faithful Grue-Crew - Crystal Cleveland, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they, maybe not so wisely, take on Cannibal Holocaust (1980), the film often referred to as the most controversial movie ever made.

Harold Monroe, an anthropologist from New York University, leads a rescue team into the Amazon rainforest to locate a crew of filmmakers. The crew had gone missing while filming a documentary on local cannibal tribes. When the rescue team is only able to recover the crew's lost cans of film, an American television station wishes to broadcast the footage as a sensationalized television special. Upon viewing the reels, Monroe is appalled by the team's actions and objects to the station's intent to air the documentary.
IMDb
Bill chose Cannibal Holocaust as the 1970s Grue-Crew's viewing "pleasure" for this episode even though he doesn't like the film. In fact, there's a lot he despises about the movie, but he also thinks it's a brilliant masterpiece and there are parts of him that love it, it's so manipulative. It frightened the hell out of Chad, and not in a good way. He knew the animal deaths were real which made him question whether or not the violence to humans was real. It's a very difficult watch for him, although he understands its importance and influence on other filmmakers. Crystal is not bothered by the gore in Cannibal Holocaust. She adds that although no one can justify the making of Cannibal Holocaust, it can be put into context. The music was very unsettling for Jeff, making the film that much more disturbing. What bothered him the most was the relish with which the characters slaughter animals and assault the indigenous people.
Cannibal Holocaust is not for everyone, or even, not for most people. It is, however, very influential and is one of the earliest movies to incorporate a found footage concept. If you insist on seeing Cannibal Holocaust, it is currently streaming on Shudder and is available on Blu-ray from Grindhouse Releasing.

Ape-like aliens build a robotic Godzilla to destroy Japan, and the true Godzilla may not be powerful enough to destroy it.
IMDb
It's Chad's pick this episode and he first learned of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla from a trailer he saw while watching Sanford and Son and he immediately knew he had to see it, even if he had to walk uphill both ways the three miles to the theater. He is a big fan of The Six Million Dollar Man and thought Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla was the best thing he'd ever seen. Even now, he had a blast watching the movie despite its cheese factor. Bill, a huge kaiju fan, has always liked Mechagodzilla and its Swiss Army knife arsenal of weaponry. As always, Jeff is playing catch up with the rest of the 70s Grue-Crew when it comes to kaiju, but he loved the explosions! They "blowed" up stuff real good! Doc is also a lover of kaiju and monster films and was gaga over the four monsters in this one - the title characters, Anguirus, and King Shisa - and the wrestling moves the monsters utilize.
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla gets a big thumbs up from the 70s Grue-Crew! (Don't they all?) The film is currently available for streaming on HBOmax and The Criterion Channel, and on Blu-ray disc in the Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954–1975 Box Set from Criterion.

After landing on a mysterious planet, a team of astronauts begin to turn on each other, swayed by the uncertain influence of the planet and its strange inhabitants.
IMDb
Planet of the Vampires, directed by Mario Bava, is a creative science fiction/horror movie made on a shoestring budget. Chad chose this one for our viewing pleasure and he is really taken by Bava's use of color and at how influential Planet of the Vampires is on later films. When the skeletal creatures were found in the crashed ship, Whitney was disappointed she didn't see more of them later in the film but found Planet of the Vampires to be very beautiful. Daphne loved the suit designs and lush atmosphere, finding it to be a more complicated story than most 1960s science fiction. Bill, whose favorite director is Mario Bava, loved the old-school tricks Bava uses to create an alien world out of smoke, mirrors, colored lights, and forced perspective.
This episode's Grue-Crew definitely think Grue-Believers should check this one out! At the time of this writing, Planet of the Vampires is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
Gruesome Magazine's Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. In the next episode, they will discuss a movie chosen by Daphne which will be Eyes Without a Face (1960).

An old Gothic cathedral, built over a mass grave, develops strange powers which trap a number of people inside with ghosts from a 12th Century massacre seeking to resurrect an ancient demon from the bowels of the Earth.
IMDb
The Church, directed by Michele Soavi and produced by Dario Argento, is Jeff's pick. The first time he watched The Church, the opening scenes gave him a definite Monty Python and the Holy Grail vibe. Once he got that connection out of his head, he was impressed with the detailed sets, inventive and gruesome kills, and could see the Argento influence in the colored light bathing and radiating up from the underground tomb. Chad loved the effects and adds that The Church is a creepy-ass, satanic/demonic-type, Italian horror film that still holds up and one that he can keep watching. Crystal is a bit sad that this is the first time she's seen The Church. She loves some of the shots and thinks the music is fantastic. Predicting subsequent viewings will elevate the film in his estimation, Bil loves the imagery of the goat demon and the angel wrapping a woman in its wings. For him, The Church fits somewhere on a scale between Fulci on one end and Argento on the other.
Your loyal Decades of Horror 1980s Grue Crew deems The Church a worthwhile watch! Sometimes referred to as Demons 3 (don't let Soavi hear you call it that), is an ambitious film that hits on some levels and not on others. And please! Don't think too hard about the plot. At the time of this writing, the film is available for streaming on Amazon Prime and as a Blu-ray disc from Doppelganger Releasing.

A couple is terrorized in their new house haunted by the vengeful ghost of the woman's former husband, who possesses their young son.
IMDb
This one is Bill's pick and even though he is a super Bava-fan, it slipped by him for a while due to the title change from Shock to Beyond the Door II. When he eventually viewed it, he realized it was missing Bava's bold use of colors but still contained impressive small touches that identified the film as his, even with a minuscule budget and a small cast. Chad enjoyed Shock, especially the Bava moments, but laments it being his last film, wishing the director had gone out on a higher note. For Jeff, this is definitely Daria Nicolodi's film and the last 15-20 minutes of bizarreness made it all worthwhile. Doc, while pointing out its unevenness, goes on to say Shock is definitely for Bava fans and fans of drive-in movies with the film playing like the third movie on a drive-in bill.
You Bava completists and 70s drive-in movie fans out there need to check out Shock. At the time of this writing, the film is available for streaming from Shudder and Amazon Prime.

REVIEW: THE VIGIL (2021)
Steeped in ancient Jewish lore and demonology, THE VIGIL is supernatural horror film set over the course of a single evening in Brooklyn's Hasidic Borough Park neighborhood. Low on funds and having recently left his insular religious community, Yakov reluctantly accepts an offer from his former rabbi and confidante to take on the responsibility of an overnight "shomer," fulfilling the Jewish practice of watching over the body of a deceased community member. Shortly after arriving at the recently departed's dilapidated house to sit the vigil, Yakov begins to realize that something is very, very wrong.
