  • Hour of the Wolf (1968) - Episode 52 - Decades of Horror: The Classic Era

'The old ones called it "the hour of the wolf." It is the hour when most people die, when most children are born. Now is when nightmares come to us. And if we are awake … we're afraid.' Everyone experiences this phenomenon but it was Ingmar Bergman who brought this bit of Swedish folklore to the mass consciousness and gave it a name. Join this episode's Grue Crew - Joseph Perry, Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, and Jeff Mohr - as they do their best to decypher Ingmar Bergman's Hour of the Wolf.

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Episode 52 – Hour of the Wolf (1968)

    Synopsis:

While vacationing on a remote Scandinavian island with his younger pregnant wife, an artist has an emotional breakdown while confronting his repressed desires.

    IMDb

    • Writer/Director: Ingmar Bergman
    • Featured Cast:
      • Max von Sydow as Johan Borg
      • Liv Ullmann as Alma Borg
      • Gertrud Fridh as Corinne von Merkens
      • Georg Rydeberg as Lindhorst
      • Erland Josephson as Baron von Merkens
      • Naima Wifstrand as Old Lady with Hat
      • Ulf Johansson as Heerbrand
      • Gudrun Brost as Gamla Fru von Merkens
      • Ingrid Thulin as Veronica Vogler

Usually considered Bergman's one true horror film, Hour of the Wolf, aka Vargtimmen, had your loyal Grue Crew baffled and befuddled at times. Joseph, the only Bergman non-virgin among them, did his best to guide the others. Jeff is impressed with several set pieces throughout the film giving it more the feel of a disjointed nightmare than a cohesive story and identifies Strange Brew as his favorite Max von Sydow appearance. The lady with the face that came off with her hat piqued Whitney's interest as she found the makeup and effects fascinating. Chad is glad to have had the opportunity to broaden his horizons and to discuss Hour of the Wolf but still isn't able to see it as a horror film. What he calls "surrealist, arthouse, but-is-it-horror?" horror films are a particular love of Joseph's (Surprise, surprise!) so he finds much more to like in Hour of the Wolf than the rest of the Grue Crew.

As most Grue-Believers already know, Bergman is not for everyone and requires some work from the viewer. Having said that, your Grue Crew is universally impressed with the imagery Bergman put to film. Many of the scenes in Hour of the Wolf will be stuck in their collective memories for quite some time. You should definitely check this one out if you feel so inclined, but don't expect to have a feel for exactly what happened.

The Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Grue Crew plan to release a new episode every other week and hey, where else will you hear podcasts on films ranging from Invasion of the Saucer Men (1957) to Bride of Frankenstein (1935) to Hour of the Wolf? The next episode in our very flexible schedule will be Roger Corman's A Bucket of Blood (1959), starring the late, great Dick Miller.

Please let us know what you think of Decades of Horror: The Classic Era! After all, without you, we're only talking about the films we love. Send us an email at [email protected] or leave us a message, a review, or a comment at GruesomeMagazine.com, iTunes, the Gruesome Magazine Horror News Radio Facebook group or your friendly neighborhood podcast aggregator.

To each of you from each of us, "Thank you so much for listening!"

  • Don't Look Now (1973) – Episode 91 – Decades of Horror 1970s

"Nothing is what it seems." You can say that again, especially when Nicolas Roeg is the director of the film. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they don their red raincoats in the rainy, English countryside and make a trip to Venice, Italy as depicted by Nicolas Roeg in his 1973 classic, Don't Look Now.

    Decades of Horror 1970s Episode 91 – Don't Look Now (1973)

Synopsis: A married couple grieving the recent death of their young daughter are in Venice when they encounter two elderly sisters, one of whom is psychic and brings a warning from beyond.

    • Director: Nicolas Roeg
    • Writers:
      • Allan Scott
      • Chris Bryant
      • Daphne Du Maurier (from the story by)
    • Editor: Graeme Clifford
    • Featured Cast:
      • Julie Christie as Laura Baxter
      • Donald Sutherland as John Baxter
      • Hilary Mason as Heather
      • Clelia Matania as Wendy
      • Massimo Serato as Bishop Barbarrigo
      • Renato Scarpa as Inspector Longhi

The Decades of Horror 1970s Grue Crew is in universal awe of director Nicolas Roeg's work in this film. Bill professes his undying love for Julie Christie's mind and thinks Don't Look Now is so well done, it would make an ideal subject for a film school project. It's the legendary sex scene that Chad first heard about, but he now appreciates the movie for the complete cinematic experience it delivers. Doc is a fan of Donald Sutherland's work and his performance in Don't Look Now and reveals another set of leads that might have replaced Christie and Sutherland. Roeg's penchant for depicting time as fluid rather than linear impressed Jeff as did all of the recurring motifs he uses in the film.

Don't Look Now receives an enthusiastic thumbs-up from all of the members of the Grue Crew! It is currently available to stream on SHUDDER and Jeff also highly recommends the Criterion Blu-ray edition.

  • Night of the Demons (1988) - Episode 144 - Decades of Horror 1980s

"Relax! I just wanna look good for the boys. You did remember to invite some cute boys to the party I hope." scream queen Linnea Quigley's Suzanne berates Amelia Kinkade's Angela in the classic Eighties B-movie NIGHT OF THE DEMONS. Christopher G. Moore is joined by co-host, international cosplay queen Vanessa Thomas, to discuss one of the better entries to the genre in the later half of the decade.

    Decades of Horror 1980s Episode 144 – (1988)

"Angela is having a party, Jason and Freddy are too scared to come. But You'll have a hell of a time." rings the tagline for director Kevin S. Tenney's classic Eighties gorefest, introducing "Angela" to genre fans in October of 1988. Amelia "Mimi" Kinkade stars as Angela who, along with her partner in crime Suzanne (playing by the wonderful Linnea Quigley), invites a number of her high school classmates to a Halloween party in an abandoned, notorious funeral parlor called "Hull House." One seance in and the partiers awaken a demon out to consume their souls, providing gorehounds with a series of memorable late-Eighties kills: eye-gouges, head-spins, impalements, tongue biting, and introducing a little game of "hide the lipstick."

Christopher and Vanessa revisit Night of the Demons discussing the direction, the cast, and the effects by Steve Johnson. With this episode, Christopher introduces a new set of segments to spotlight the decade in which it was made, the 1980s. Relive the fashion, the dialog, the products, the attitudes that made the Eighties one of the most energetic, fun, and often campy decades ever. Enjoy!

Ten teenagers party at an abandoned funeral parlor on Halloween night. When an evil force awakens, demonic spirits keep them from leaving and turn their gathering into a living Hell. ling spree.

  • The Devil Commands (1941) - Episode 51 - Decades of Horror: The Classic Era

"My father had become a very strange man!" That's not something anyone wants to hear from their daughter, but nevertheless, it's what Boris Karloff's character's daughter says of him in The Devil Commands (1941). Join this episode's Grue Crew - Whitney Collazo, Chad Hunt, and Jeff Mohr - as they lock themselves in the laboratory with the best of Columbia's Boris Karloff "Mad Doctor" series of films.

Decades of Horror: The Classic Era Episode 51 – The Devil Commands (1941)

Synopsis: A scientist becomes obsessed with the idea of communicating with his dead wife.

    • Director: Edward Dmytryk
    • Writers:
      • Robert Hardy Andrews (as Robert D. Andrews)
      • Milton Gunzburg
      • William Sloane (from his novel The Edge of Running Water, 1939)

    • Featured Cast:
      • Boris Karloff as Dr. Julian Blair
      • Richard Fiske as Dr. Richard Sayles
      • Amanda Duff as Anne Blair
      • Anne Revere as Mrs. Walters
      • Ralph Penney (Cy Schindell) as Karl
      • Dorothy Adams as Mrs. Marcy
      • Walter Baldwin as Seth Marcy
      • Kenneth MacDonald as Sheriff Ed Willis
      • Shirley Warde as Helen Blair

Jeff picked this movie when he discovered it was: 1. based on William Sloane's novel The Edge of Running Water; and 2. directed by Edward Dmytryk, one of his favorite noir film directors. He was not disappointed! Though they hadn't seen The Devil Commands before, Chad and Whitney were pleasantly surprised as well. Whitney finds the relationship between Karloff's Dr. Blair and Anne Revere's Mrs. Walters, a medium turned Svengali, to be disturbing yet realistic, considering Dr. Blair's devastation at his wife's death. Chad comments on the arc Dr. Blair follows from principled scientist and happy family man to a physically deteriorated, obsessed scientist who has lost almost all connection to his humanity.

The Devil Commands receives a unanimous recommendation from your Grue Crew as an undiscovered gem from the 1940s. Don't waste any time checking it out! For that matter, dig into William Sloane's novel as well!

  • Deathline aka Raw Meat (1972) – Episode 90 – Decades of Horror 1970s

"Mind the doors!" is the haunting words uttered from the cannibalistic beast that searches for food in the forgotten classic, Deathline (1972), which U.S. drive-ins projected as Raw Meat. Join your faithful Grue Crew - Doc Rotten, Chad Hunt, Bill Mulligan, and Jeff Mohr - as they travel to the abandoned "tubes" under London along with Donald Pleasence and Christopher Lee.

Decades of Horror 1970s Episode90 – Deathline aka Raw Meat (1973)

Synopsis: There's something pretty grisly going on under London in the Tube tunnels between Holborn and Russell Square. When a top civil servant becomes the latest to disappear down there Scotland Yard start to take the matter seriously. Helping them are a young couple who get nearer to the horrors underground than they would wish.

    IMDb

    • Writer/Director: Gary Sherman
    • Featured Cast:
      • Donald Pleasence as Inspector Calhoun
      • Norman Rossington as Detective Sergeant Rogers
      • David Ladd as Alex Campbell
      • Sharon Gurney as Patricia Wilson
      • Hugh Armstrong as The 'Man'
      • June Turner as The 'Woman'
      • Clive Swift as Inspector Richardson
      • James Cossins as James Manfred, OBE
      • Christopher Lee as Stratton-Villiers, MI5

Despite the misleading U.S. poster for "Raw Meat," the film, under its original title of DEATHLINE, is a curious and fascinating gem. Many horror fans know of the film, but not everyone has seen it. The under-appreciated classic has a lot going for it: a skilled direction from Gary Sherman (Dead & Buried); a delightfully funny performance from Donald Pleasence; a cameo from the legendary Christopher Lee; and, a creepy underground dwelling cannibal family known only as "him" and "her." The Grue-Crew dive into the movie's tone, effects, and cast as they discover many of the crew are catching it for the very first time. It may be time for you to do so as well...
