Just Religious

There is a great difference between being religious and being righteous.

The church at Sardis was religious but not righteous. As a result, they are a church in the process of dying. . . if not already dead and lifeless.

Though the church had an excellent reputation and was highly respected, it was dying.

Many people and even churches live religious lives but fail to live righteous lives. We all know that God doesn’t judge us by our outward appearance. . . our religious actions, but by what is true of our hearts.

These folks at Sardis sat in church. . . not thinking about the demands of and the blessedness of their faith. They sat in church half asleep thinking about everything else. They let their minds wander.

They were in church because it was the thing to do. . . it was the place to be.

Like so many today, participation in spiritual rituals such as Sunday Worship and ministry activities provided them with a sense of religious security.
