    In this conversation with Julia Tew, I learned:

    • The Inner Development Goals were developed by the global North and in many cases it is the global South that suffering even more from the crisis, many of which are worsened by the global North.
  • Africa has well-established concepts like Ubuntu and also deals with a lot of trauma.
  • Possibly adding forgiveness to the IDGs, input from Africa.
  • Long-term orientation is not always part of the culture in Africa.
  • Inner compass and going inward, mindfulness, are more Western concepts.
  • The wise voices of our ancestors are not in the IDG.
  • What happens to me, happens to we. (Ubuntu)
  • Ubuntu is systems thinking and going back to the whole.
  • The disconnect from the whole has gotten us into this mess. What happens to you, is probably going to affect me.
  • Look at the case study of Ghana. Who are the leaders, what are they doing differently?
  • It’s Africa’s time. The giant is awaiting.
  • The Golden Rule is the principle of treating others as one wants to be treated.
  • Allow Africa to want to bring their living standards that are acceptable and comfortable. This requires a rebalancing.
  • Solopreneurs in the pilot of the four-day week.
  • The future of work will look different. The younger generations are challenging the way we work.

    Wat ik leerde van Laura Rooseboom:

    • Een lening van een bank is heel anders dan het eigen vermogen dat een venture capital fonds er in stopt. Die nemen meer risico. Dan hoeft het bedrijf nog niet winstgevend is. Een bank is as geïnteresseerd als er winst en een positieve cashflow is.
  • Je moet het bedrijf wel verkopen, anders zit het geld voor eeuwig vast.
  • Seed capital betekent dat het bedrijf nog heel jong is.
  • Er is een investeringsfocus gekoppeld aan ieder fonds.
  • One Planet Crowd volgen de 17 doelen van de Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s).
  • Door crowdfunding the venture capital funding zou kunnen democratiseren.
  • Via crowdfunding kun je al voor EUR 250 meedoen.
  • Als venture capitalist ga je in gesprek met de ondernemer en onderhandel je over de waarde van het bedrijf.
  • Een converteerbare lening kun je omzetten in aandelen.
  • De twee partners hebben de aandacht verdeeld over de fondsen.
  • Ze hebben in 2023 voor het eerst in 16 jaar een business plan gemaakt.
  • Laura voelt de urgentie om de transities te versnellen.
  • De overheid is te korte termijn periode. Er moeten plannen komen voor de komende 50 jaar.
  • Er is een verschil tussen de landelijke, provinciale en gemeentelijke overheden wat betreft lange termijn. Het provinciaal fonds Overijssel heeft bijvoorbeeld een looptijd van 15 jaar.
  • De grootste bottleneck lijkt nu het net te zijn, maar dat is al 20 jaar bekend. Terwijl het netbeheer van de overheid is.
  • Doordat investeerders vooral investeren in mannelijke teams, worden andersoortige producten niet ontwikkeld.
  • We investeren vaak in mensen die op onszelf lijken.
  • De private personen die in het Borski fonds zijn gestapt zijn 70% vrouwen en de mannen die instappen hebben vaak veel dochters.
  • Ze krijgen de meeste investeerders in het crowdfunding platform via de nieuwsbrief met 30.000 abonnees. Schrijf je hier in.
  • De ondernemers kunnen de versnelling van de verandering brengen. Vaak hebben ze niet genoeg geld om hun groeiplannen waar te maken.
  • Actievoeren en Extinction Rebellion wordt nu steeds breder geaccepteerd, waardoor ze misschien de overheid gaan beïnvloeden.
  • Haar wens: Er zou een verdeelplatform moeten komen die de middelen van de pensioenfondsen kan verdelen, om zo het grote geld naar kleine bedrijven te krijgen.

    Opvallende lessen uit het boek voor mij:
    • Een belangrijk boek voor startup ondernemers om in de kast te hebben en telkens weer te gebruiken.
  • Het boek gaat over de vier fasen tot 100 medewerkers, terwijl het ook interessant is om fases 5 en 6 te ontdekken om echt groots te denken.
  • De werken aan je organisatie versus in je organisatie matrix.
  • Het charme offensief in de eerste fase.
  • Neem rechtvaardige en congruente besluiten als oprichter.
  • Wat is mijn werk als oprichter en loslaten.
  • Recruitment en onboarding goed opzetten.
  • Als organisaties groter worden, moet je structuren bouwen, zaken moet overdragen en loslaten. Waar ondernemers moeite hebben met loslaten omdat dat is waarmee ze het bedrijf gestart zijn, veel zelf doen.
  • Gedisciplineerd zijn in combinatie met experimenten om te blijven vernieuwen.
  • Ze heeft het over psychologische veiligheid en over een winnaarsmentaliteit, die over het algemeen conflicterend zijn. Een bedrijf waar een winnaarsmentaliteit leeft, is minder veilig voor de medewerkers en andere stakeholders.
  • Soms is sneller langzamer, alleen je ziet het op dat moment niet.
  • Blijf je in de cellenorganisatie altijd in fase 1 van het groei model?
  • Wat is de definitie van de beste medewerker?
  • Leren van en met elkaar in de online omgeving rondom het boek.
  • Het continu blijven herhalen van de purpose en de kernwaarden van de organisatie.
  • De organisatie groeit sneller dan jij je kunt ontwikkelen als ondernemer. Hou in de gaten dat jouw eigen ontwikkeling past bij de groei van je bedrijf.
  • Interessante vragen: Wat voor soort ondernemer wil je zijn? Hoe hard wil je groeien? Wat is je plafond?

  • The root of the word apocalypse is about the ending of something and the beginning of something new.
  • Showing up as best we can, with a loving presence and figuring out what we can offer, and making sure that we have the chance to rest.

  • Salons are hubs for cultural and political change in which people would come together, often run by women.

    Wat ik leerde van Merel:

    • Doordat alles met elkaar verbonden is, betekent ook dat we continu impact maken. Je bent continu aan het co-creëren samen.
  • De empowerment zit ook in de verbondenheid.
  • Iedereen vindt leren leuk, maar we koppelen leren aan school en niet iedereen vindt school leuk.
  • Als we niet leren gaan we dood.
  • We hebben met elkaar bedacht, om mee te doen in de maatschappij dat je als kind nog niet af bent en daarvoor eerst naar school moet.
  • We zijn een systeem met elkaar en dus iedereen doet er toe.
  • Onderwijs kan de transities ondersteunen.
  • Wie moeten we zijn als mens om voor onszelf en andere levensvormen een toekomst te creëren?
  • Er is op dit moment te weinig ruimte in het onderwijs om mensheid te ontwikkelen.
  • De wereld en de natuur als klaslokaal gebruiken.
  • De jongeren zijn al veel verder met diversiteit en inclusiviteit bijvoorbeeld.
  • Jongeren hebben vaak een gevoel van machteloosheid, we kunnen het schip niet meer keren.
  • Het verbinden met de natuur, met je omgeving, kan hoop geven.
  • Een crisis op mentaal en zielniveau, met de vraag hoe is onze verhouding tot de aarde en hoe is ons natuurbeeld daarin.
  • Iedereen draagt het zaadje van hoop in zich.
  • Gewoon mens zijn is genoeg.
  • Plekken in Nederland komen, voor jongeren, waar leren van en met elkaar veel meer centraal staat.
  • Systemisch is het fijn dat we scholen hebben. Tijd voor volwassenen om te werken. We weten van kinderen wat ze leren. Het draagt bij aan gelijke kansen.
  • Wat we zien als school mag breder worden getrokken, meer dan het cognitieve, meer in verbinding met de maatschappij en de natuur.
  • Leiden we op tot de arbeidsmarkt om dan weer meer groei te generen?
  • Opleiden om de economische groei te dienen. Vervangen door, hoe kun je een waardevol mens zijn en hoe kun je de aarde dienen.
  • In plaats van vrouwen aan te spreken om meer te gaan werken, mannen aanspreken om meer te gaan zorgen.
  • Als we blijven spelen, dan hou je ook de verwondering.
  • Als school de vraag centraal stellen, hoe je de mens kunt opleiden om de aarde te dienen.

    • Merel Collenteur is co-founder van ‘t Wylde Leren en Kabold. Als bioloog en outdoor coach maakte ze reizen met Nederlandse jongeren naar onder meer de Caribische eilanden en Noorwegen. Via avontuurlijke ondernemingen maakt ze ruimte voor de jongeren van nu. Ze laat deze jongeren weer leren in verbinding met zichzelf en hun natuurlijke omgeving. Ze gebruikt daarbij haar kennis van groepsdynamica, ecosystemen en regeneratief leiderschap.

    In this conversation with Erin I learned:

    • Selling offsets for carbon is not enough.
  • For degrowth economics, you have to do the work yourself.
  • A lot of sustainability roles were about sustaining business as usual.
  • With Rebiz she created a sustainability course that was very honest about the changes we need, individually, organizationally, and systemically.
  • Compound interest and exponential growth by investing early and young is fantastic, unless it is correlated highly with a geological footprint, then it is destructive.
  • Growing at a rate of three percent in 24 years it is a doubling, over 100 years it is nineteen times larger.
  • Companies getting bigger by selling carbon offsets.
  • For the remainder of the years after overshoot day, we will be stealing from future generations.
  • We need 1.7 planet earths to sustain our current live stiles. There are some countries that live as we have six planet earths.
  • We are breaching six out of nine planetary boundaries.
  • There is no healthy metric that says we can continue to grow our economies further. We are already too big.
  • Try to live hope free.
  • We just need to do what the world requires of us.
  • We don’t have a right to ask whether we’re going to succeed or not. The only question we have a right to ask is what’s the right thing to do? What does this earth require of us if we want to continue to live on it? – Wendell Berry
  • Just keep moving forward, and keep doing what I am capable of doing.
  • There is a conversation around grief: denial, bargaining, depression, anger, and acceptance. Moving to that acceptance stage the grieve can turn into action.
  • There are no climate-friendly governments in power, doing what we need to do to reach the Paris Agreement, yet.
  • Her theory of change is in social tipping points. If you get 25% on board, it very clicky becomes 75%.
  • Don’t see yourself as a consumer, but be a citizen. We can be so much more than just consumers or employees.
  • There is a point where it is too much effort to be a good consumer, and you could spend that time becoming active on a larger scale.
  • Don’t get stuck in the individual footprint.
  • Why would we ever think that individual actions are enough to change the system that is eating up our planet?
  • Reconnecting business leaders back to earth.
  • Definition of degrowth: a planned and democratic reduction of material and energy throughput, in over-consuming nations, while improving well-being in those nations and global justice.
  • GDP and well-being have been decoupled since the eighties. Well-being has stagnated.
  • The way that the global economic system has been set up is just unjust at the moment. We are taking labor and resources from the global South and using them to drive growth in the global North.

    • Erin began her career in business with over a decade of experience in Blue Chip FMCG corporation in Sydney and London, however, she found it difficult to reconcile the growth she was tasked with achieving with the ecological crises that were becoming impossible to ignore. Erin now focuses her time on sharing her knowledge about degrowth and system change through her writing on Illuminem and Resilience and through the online workshop she co-created called (re)Biz.

    What a great conversation this was, I learned a lot about degrowth, Modern Monetary Theory, are fixation on growth, well-being and more.
