Beginning in Romans 3, Paul has been speaking to the Jews and demonstrating to them that justification by faith was not a new truth but was clearly established in the Old Testament. Why is this important? Because the gospel, in its content and application, never changes. Sinful men are only justified through faith, looking to a faithful God who saves. Paul uses Abraham, the Father of Israel, in this text to prove this very point.

The Lord highly prizes fervent love, and His “well done” will make all the glory associated with winning the World Cup look like an old, crumpled Dixie cup in comparison.

Faith must be granted to us. If a person is not given faith, there is no hope for him. He will never understand his sin or God’s righteousness. He will never comprehend who Jesus is, nor appreciate what He did. He will never trust Jesus for his salvation. No one is able to receive and understand the biblical Jesus without God’s sovereign work (Mark 4:10–12).

But we did not obtain our salvation and God’s favor because of our works. Even in the present, we do not obtain favor or righteousness before God because of what we do. Our daily relationship with the Lord is based on the continuous work of Jesus and His perfect righteousness. We stand justified before God not because of our goodness, but because of Jesus’ righteousness. And only through Him can our imperfect obedience be accepted in God’s sight.

This is an important truth for all Christians. The concept of love that we hear and see today is completely different from the teaching of Christ. What is sinful and twisted has been taught as if it is true love, and what is truly loving according to the Bible is considered as sinful or hateful.

We must never overlook the importance of sound doctrine, of careful and meticulous interpretation of God’s word, of efforts to get it right and cut it straight. Sound doctrine guards us from error. It produces true, spiritual growth in our lives. May we never disregard those faithful and qualified men whom God has called to preach His word and speak the truth. Let others have their ears tickled, if they must, but let us pursue the hard truths that are fitting for sound doctrine.

Beloved brothers and sisters, bask in the glory of God, humbly proclaiming the gospel to believers and unbelievers. Don’t diminish the power of the gospel, but boast in it. Boast in our Savior and proclaim the gospel without reservation or discrimination. Girolamo Savonarola, an Italian forerunner of the Reformation, said that you can go to paradise if you want to, because your Savior, Christ, has gone there, but know that it is not by your own nature or by your own virtue that you will reach that place. Praise God for sending His Son to die so that we—Jews and Gentiles—might live!

This is why we need to spread the gospel and make disciples of all nations. No culture, no tribe, nor group of people can claim to be free from sin, because we are all descendants of Adam. Every tribe and every nation has to hear the good news of salvation given by the Father. Stop and pray that from all nations, those in Adam, can be saved in Christ.
