Decolonizing Religion Part 4 – Keeping Things “Normal”

Listen Later

Well, if it gets much colder you can expect to see me live streaming from either some isolated space in another (warmer) locale or from within a literal ice cube. Brrr. I love the clear blue skies and the sparkle in the air, but frozen cars and cracked skin…not so much. We’ll make it through, I expect, but let’s also remember to keep an eye out for ways we can help those more vulnerable to the cold than most of us in this community would be. It might be as ordinary as putting some food in the “donate” bin on the way out of the grocery store or finding out where to repurpose your used parka, but it might save someone’s life.

Speaking of which…I had an Indigenous acquaintance remind me this past week that this whole conversation about decolonizing isn’t about guilt; it’s about remembering the kids that left home and never made it back and doing what we need to do so that doesn’t happen again. To put it another way, not keeping things “normal” is a matter of life and death, as surely as having enough food or a warm enough jacket when it’s a zillion below. This Sunday in the Talky Bit we’ll be exploring a bit of social theory about things that sort of quietly operate within our society that tend to bend us toward keeping things the way they are, rather than working for change where it’s needed.
We’ll meet at 10:45 a.m. here for music and Community Time (thanks for continuing to share what’s happening in everyday life; it’s the only linkage some of us have to one another right now), and then on to the Talky Bit. Talky Bits can almost always be found posted early in the week as podcasts either here, or via Apple / Itunes Podcasts or a similar podcatcher.
That will be followed by “And Lunch After”, our Sunday zoom hangout, which will be aided and abetted by the Wednesday Evening zoom hangout. LInks for those two events are as follows:
Sunday: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81978070666?pwd=aWc2SjFWWE1sZUVMNG5IUi9VQ0duZz09
Wednesday: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85777988652?pwd=UGR2ZkxtWklEaFZ5bXE1b3RkdUJXdz09
I’ll see you all on Sunday, if I can get the ice off my camera lens.
Be safe, and stay warm.
Peace,
Tim Plett
