What does Deep Learning look like in a junior secondary maths setting?

Can Deep Learning work in a multi-age classroom?

These are a few of the questions we will discuss in today's episode of Deep Dive

How important is mindset when developing cultures of thinking in classrooms?

Is learning a consequence of thinking?

Can using thinking routines in the classroom change teachers and student engagement?

Dr Ron Ritchhart a Senior Research Associate and Principal Investigator at Harvard Project Zero where his work focuses on the development of school and classroom culture as prime vehicles for developing students as powerful thinkers and learners. Ron has written and co-written a number of books which focus on how teachers can create classrooms where thinking is valued, visible and actively promoted as part of the day to day experience of all group members. We also have Emma Webber an experienced educator and Deputy Principal who works in a school in the Southeast Region in Queensland, Australia. They will discuss these questions and more to uncover how learning is integral to learning.

Why is it so important to intrinsically know our students and not just teach content? What is the role of the leadership team in school improvement? How does Deep Learning and Lead Learning Collaborative synergise?

Michael Fullan and Lyn Sharratt will discuss these questions and more to unpack how DEEP LEARNING and CLARITY of FACES for School and System Improvement connect together to enhance teacher engagement and student outcomes.  In an ever-changing world, schools require strong frameworks and innovative practices to engage teachers and students, connect them with the real world, build skills, self-confidence and self-efficacy through new pedagogies and a supportive environment.

Our guests this week are David a Primary School Principal, Jodie a Deputy Principal, Kate who is working as the Head of Curriculum and Lisa a teacher who is teaching a grade 5/6 class this year. They will be delving deeply into the area of curiosity. Discussing topics about what does it mean to be curious and is our education system killing curiosity.  They will also share their opinions from evidence and experience around if they believe curiosity can be taught and is this a disposition that is necessary for people to be life long learners.

You will also get helpful tips from leaders of learning in the school and an experienced classroom teacher about how they cultivating curiosity in their classrooms and across their school community.

How has this pedagogical approach helped with teacher and student engagement?

And is there a place for curiosity in our classrooms? And if so, how can this be achieved using SOLE a session?

Our guests this week, Yvette and Kerrie are both experienced teachers who work in a primary school setting.  They will discuss their personal journey's into how using Self Organised Learning Environments in a classroom as a pedagogical approach has transformed their teaching and student engagement.  This approach was developed by 2022 Brock Prize winner Sugata Mitra, who is probably best known in the education community for developing the concept of self-organised learning environments following his ‘Hole in the Wall’ experiments in 1999, where he placed a computer in the wall of an Indian slum and observed that given the right circumstances, children could teach each other almost anything.

Since that time, SOLE has become a part of mainstream education worldwide, increasing opportunities for thousands of people. 

Yvette and Kerrie will also share with you, practical tips you can use in your classrooms to enhance student engagement and outcomes when using SOLE with students.

How can we empower students? Can everyone learn maths to high levels?

What are the most effective ways to teach mathematics based on evidence?

Our guests this week, Liz and Robyn are both educators with a wealth of experience in both regional and teaching positions.  They will share their personal experiences and discuss their passion for student centred learning in mathematics.  You will hear about how they were not that fond of maths in their own journeys until they discovered that this subject is not just about learning rules to be regurgitated but it is a creative subject where your ideas, concepts and patterns connect.

Liz and Robyn will also share with you, practical tips you can use in your classrooms to enhance student engagement and outcomes in mathematics.
