Phillip Shepherd is a regular on the show and he's got a new book, his third, called Deep Fitness, about presence in working out. It’s not at all what we imagine it to be. However there is no room for doubt in Philip, he is one of the leaders in the global embodiment movement. One of his first two books is about radical wholeness, which puts you in a transformation that is really present. His other book is New Self, New World, about global embodiment and wholeness, like he is. So really, when Philip talks anything about fitness and improvement, we always listen.
It turns out there’s more to exercising than simply strength, endurance, and muscle growth. Studies have shown that athletes who make a conscious effort to be present during their workout report feeling more relaxed, happier, and physically fit than those who don’t.
Training to failure, the most misunderstood way to work out, while it can be really challenging, will actually make your body more resilient and will help you perform better. It's not about pushing through the pain, but rather becoming conscious of discomfort or effort during exercise. Being present will not only bring mindfulness to your workouts, but also to other areas of life too.
You don’t even need to leave the house or gym to discover everything you need to reach your goals and achieve the best body you’ve ever had. The Men in Purpose community is filled with men like Philip, who seek a deeper purpose and meaning in all aspects of their life, check out similar episodes like 173 and 209
