In a recent appearance on the No Priors AI-focused podcast, and at the Nvidia AI Summit held in Mumbai, India, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang shared a powerful new vision for AI advancement: a concept he calls "Hyper Moore's Law." Unlike the original Moore's Law, which foresaw the doubling of transistor density on microchips every two years, Huang suggests that AI's growth rate could far exceed this pace. With Nvidia's advanced GPU technology at the forefront, this Hyper Moore's Law signals an era where innovations in AI and machine learning might unfold faster than ever, redefining sectors from healthcare to automotive and beyond. But what does this accelerated progress mean, and how might it change our world?
What is "Hyper Moore's Law" in AI?
Moore's Law has been the technology industry's guiding star since the 1960s, driving expectations for steady growth in computing power. However, Huang argues that AI’s growth trajectory requires a fresh perspective—one that accounts for how quickly both hardware and algorithms are evolving. Hyper Moore’s Law represents an expectation of exponential advancements in AI, not just because of more powerful hardware but also through optimized algorithms, access to massive datasets, and Nvidia’s pioneering work in GPU technology. In Huang's view, the coming years could see AI innovations occurring at breakneck speed.

Final Thoughts: A New Era of Acceleration
Imagine a world where breakthroughs in AI come not once a decade but potentially every few months. This is the future Jensen Huang is hinting at—a future where AI’s potential isn’t just growing steadily; it’s accelerating in a way we may struggle to keep up with. "Hyper Moore's Law" is more than a catchy phrase; it represents a paradigm shift. Instead of the familiar, gradual advancement we've come to expect from Moore's Law, we’re looking at a turbocharged pace of progress in AI—where industries, technologies, and even our daily interactions with machines evolve faster than most people can anticipate.
But why does this matter? If Hyper Moore's Law takes hold, sectors like healthcare, climate science, education, and transportation will experience transformations on a breathtaking scale. Imagine disease detection algorithms advancing so quickly that what’s cutting-edge today becomes yesterday’s news by next month. Or climate models so sophisticated that they can adapt to new environmental data in real time, helping us predict and combat the effects of climate change more effectively.
Rapid AI advancement brings questions beyond just "what can we do?" to "what should we do?" Hyper Moore's Law could mean we're deploying new AI capabilities before we fully understand their implications. Will AI be advancing too quickly for laws, regulations, or ethical frameworks to catch up? And what does that mean for privacy, labor, and security?
For AI researchers, engineers, and entrepreneurs, Hyper Moore's Law represents both an unprecedented opportunity and a daunting challenge. The very boundaries of what we can imagine are shifting. Where Moore's Law pushed us to dream of faster computers, Hyper Moore’s Law forces us to envision a world where AI transforms society at lightning speed. Are we ready to live in a world that changes as fast as our technology?

Anthropic's latest experimental release, the "computer use" feature, embedded in its Claude 3.5 model, brings AI automation to a new frontier. Unlike traditional models that generate text, "computer use" allows AI to interact with software like a human, navigating, clicking, typing, and managing tasks across applications. Although limited to developers for now, this capability represents a step toward more general-purpose AI agents, enabling streamlined workflows and real-world automation in previously untapped areas.
What is "Computer Use?"
The experimental "computer use" feature allows Claude 3.5 to physically interact with a computer's interface—opening files, navigating folders, or even managing emails. This means that Claude can execute specific tasks by actually simulating how a person would operate software. Imagine asking an AI to open your Photos folder, sort pictures by date or event, and create new folders for organization. While we've seen AI assist with decision-making or generating content, this hands-on capability makes it an “agent” that can directly complete tasks.
How Is This Different?
The big differentiator here is that this feature goes beyond traditional AI tasks like language generation or single-function automation (e.g., sending an email or running a script). "Computer use" provides the AI with the ability to interact directly with a computer's user interface, mimicking human actions. Many AI agents today are limited by their environment—working only within specific apps or operating under strict user supervision. Claude 3.5's capability bridges this gap, providing a more flexible and dynamic approach to task automation.
This is a significant jump because the AI isn't just processing information—it’s managing and executing tasks across multiple programs. It can combine things like organizing files, generating reports, or even filling out forms on websites—all within one workflow.
Here is an example of "Computer use for coding" as shown by a Developer at Anthropic.
Why It’s Significant for the Future of AI Agents
By moving into this territory, Anthropic is inching closer to the vision of AI as a truly general-purpose agent. AI could potentially handle routine tasks on computers, from organizing folders, managing emails, and even making appointments, to navigating complex software. This would allow users—whether individuals or businesses—to save time on mundane tasks and focus on higher-level decision-making.
Although it’s in an experimental phase and restricted to developers for testing, the implications are exciting. As the feature evolves, AI could become a true digital assistant, handling much more than just language-based tasks.
Here is a researcher at Anthropic showing “computer use for orchestrating tasks.”
Challenges and Future Outlook
While the possibilities are vast, there are still challenges. Since this is an experimental feature, Anthropic is gathering feedback from developers to refine its performance. The model will need to navigate the delicate balance of automation and user control—ensuring that the AI acts autonomously but doesn’t overstep, especially when dealing with sensitive data. Additionally, robust safeguards are needed to ensure the AI follows proper guidelines and maintains security.
As "computer use" develops, it could reshape the way AI agents are integrated into everyday workflows, expanding from digital assistance into more autonomous, agent-like interactions with our devices.
Final Thoughts
Anthropic’s "computer use" feature is a bold step toward creating AI agents that do more than think—they act. With the capability to interact with software and applications like a human user, this could unlock new levels of productivity and automation. Although still experimental, it’s a glimpse into a future where AI agents perform hands-on tasks seamlessly, freeing humans from repetitive computer work.

If you’ve been following Elon Musk’s latest public appearances, you might notice that he’s been exceptionally energetic with a lot of jumping around on stage as he stumps for a presidential. This is odd behavior for someone who said earlier in the year they were going to "remain neutral" in this year's presidential election. So, beyond ketamine-fueled thinking, what is really fueling this sudden passion for politics? The answer could lie in the high-stakes world of regulatory approvals and a potential autonomous driving market worth trillions.
At the center of Musk's grand vision is the Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology, which he claims will soon enable Tesla vehicles to operate completely autonomously—without human input. This could revolutionize the way we think about transportation, unleashing an era where self-driving cars dominate roads, robotaxis ferry people everywhere, and human-driven taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft become obsolete. However, there's a catch—regulatory approval. And that’s where the real shadow games begin. Let's dive into what might really be going on with the motivation and the money at stake.
The Trillion-Dollar Ride-Sharing Market
Let’s start with the staggering numbers. The global autonomous vehicle market is projected to hit $2 trillion by 2030. If Tesla's FSD technology were approved tomorrow, Tesla could emerge as a dominant player in an autonomous ride-sharing industry with unprecedented revenue potential. Full Self-Driving, once priced as high as $15,000 in 2022 now sells for $8,000. The subscription price per month is $99. Even with the "discount," scale that to the millions of cars Tesla sells worldwide, and the earnings from FSD alone could hit billions annually.
But the real treasure lies in the potential autonomous ride-sharing market. Imagine Tesla's cars operating as robotaxis, transporting people without the need for a driver. Tesla could pocket the entire fare—no more Uber cuts, no more driver salaries. It’s a business model that Musk has long hinted at, and with Tesla’s FSD system, the company could deploy its fleet as a service that operates 24/7, maximizing revenue and slashing the cost of ride-sharing for consumers.
For this dream to come true, however, Tesla's FSD needs to be approved as Level 5 autonomous driving—meaning no human intervention under any conditions. That’s where the roadblock lies. And the stakes couldn’t be higher.
Why Regulatory Approval Matters So Much
Regulatory agencies like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) have strict guidelines for autonomous vehicles, and for good reason. Without these agencies ensuring safety, a flood of untested technology could cause chaos on public roads. The issue for Musk is that Tesla's FSD, as of now, is still classified as a Level 2 driver assistance system, meaning it requires human oversight.
Musk’s Dojo supercomputer, designed to accelerate the training of Tesla’s neural networks, and his vision-only approach to FSD rely on real-world data collected from Tesla’s fleet. Tesla is betting on improving FSD’s performance through sheer scale, but regulators are hesitant to greenlight full autonomy without comprehensive safety data, particularly in handling edge cases (like unusual, unpredictable driving scenarios).
If an administration were to favor deregulation or speed up the approval process for self-driving vehicles, Tesla would be poised to gain a massive edge over competitors. Imagine a regulatory landscape where strict safety approvals are relaxed or where FSD is allowed to roll out before achieving Level 5 autonomy. It’s no wonder Musk has been vocal about politicians, particularly those advocating reduced government oversight. And it’s not just about politics—it's about being the first to tap into a multi-trillion-dollar market.
The Economic Stakes: Why Politicians Might Care
So, why would a politician push for regulatory leniency around autonomous vehicles? Here’s why:
Job Creation: The adoption of autonomous technologies like FSD could spur job creation in sectors like AI development, infrastructure, and smart city planning. Even though autonomous driving could eliminate driving jobs, it would create opportunities in tech, manufacturing, and related industries.
Economic Growth: Tesla’s dominance in autonomous ride-sharing could stimulate a massive boost in infrastructure investments, such as building new charging stations, dedicated autonomous vehicle lanes, and smart traffic systems. This, in turn, would lead to economic growth and make the U.S. a leader in autonomous driving technologies.
Global Competitiveness: With countries like China and the European Union racing to dominate autonomous vehicle technology, there’s a geopolitical angle. Fast-tracking FSD could give the U.S. an advantage in the global market, making American companies leaders in AI and self-driving technology.
Green Energy and Climate Change: Tesla’s vehicles are all electric, and politicians with a climate agenda could easily justify supporting the mass deployment of FSD as part of a larger push toward reducing carbon emissions. Tesla could be seen as the poster child for a cleaner, more efficient transportation future.
A Billion-Dollar Political Influence
Musk’s political influence can’t be ignored. While he’s known for being somewhat apolitical, or at least erratically aligned with various causes, Tesla and SpaceX benefit significantly from government contracts, incentives, and favorable regulations. Tesla has spent millions on lobbying efforts and counts on relationships in Washington to help steer decisions about the future of autonomous vehicle regulation.
And there’s no doubt that the financial incentives for politicians are massive. Musk’s companies generate enormous economic value and create jobs, making him a powerful ally for any political figure who wants to see the U.S. maintain technological leadership. Plus, favorable regulatory changes could potentially lead to stock market booms, benefiting both institutional investors and politicians who are involved with the market.
The Risks: What Happens If It Goes Wrong?
But what if Tesla’s FSD is rushed through and proves unsafe? Regulatory leniency might bring short-term economic gains, but it could result in public safety disasters if the technology isn’t ready. With Tesla already facing scrutiny over accidents involving its current driver-assistance features, any premature approval of FSD could lead to public outcry, lawsuits, and political backlash. A major accident caused by FSD could tank Tesla’s stock and damage the credibility of the politicians who pushed for its approval.
Final Thoughts: A Trillion-Dollar Gamble
Musk’s FSD system could indeed revolutionize transportation, and if it passes regulatory hurdles, Tesla stands to dominate an industry worth trillions. But to get there, regulatory approval remains the key. The combination of economic potential, political influence, and global competition makes this a high-stakes game, one where Musk’s enthusiasm on stage isn’t just about the technology itself—it’s about opening the doors to a market that could redefine the future of transportation. There's a reason why this country wasn't founded on the idea of putting ultimate power in the hands of just a few. Those ideas have been tried in the past and it never ends well.
I am a retired educator, AI enthusiast and Tesla owner. I applaud the develop of autonomous vehicles, but believe these technologies must be deployed safely and without skipping necessary regulatory safeguards. There are no shortcuts when it comes to vehicles that could run us over. The most interesting quote I ran across while researching this article was Musk commenting: "

The world of education is at a crossroads. For years, educators and technologists have speculated about the potential of AI to revolutionize teaching and close the learning gap, especially in underserved areas. Bill Gates, Ethan Mollick, and others have suggested that AI-powered tutoring systems could solve the “Two Sigma Problem,” offering personalized, one-on-one learning to students everywhere. However, Apple’s new paper, GSM-Symbolic: Understanding the Limitations of Mathematical Reasoning in Large Language Models, brings a sobering reality check, particularly when it comes to using AI for math instruction.
Apple’s Findings: Why LLMs Struggle with Math
Apple’s paper highlights a key issue: even the most advanced large language models (LLMs) struggle with mathematical reasoning. The paper demonstrates that these AI systems are not capable of handling basic grade-school math problems when symbolic reasoning is required. The crux of the problem is that LLMs excel at pattern recognition and language processing, but math often requires more than that. Solving equations or reasoning through symbolic logic involves step-by-step understanding—something current models lack .
For example, LLMs might generate coherent essays or engage in back-and-forth dialogue, but when faced with tasks like manipulating numbers or symbols, their performance falters. This inconsistency is not just a small quirk; it undermines the entire premise of using AI as a universal tutor, particularly for subjects like math where accuracy is paramount.
Our two quirky AI hosts from NotebookLM do a great job discussing this topic on today's podcast:
The Two Sigma Problem: Can AI Still Be a Solution?
The Two Sigma Problem, coined by Benjamin Bloom, refers to the challenge of getting student performance up by two standard deviations—something that human tutors have consistently been able to achieve. AI-powered tutors like Khanmigo from Khan Academy and LLMs like GPT-4 have been touted as potential solutions to this problem, especially for students in underserved areas where access to quality human tutors is limited.
However, if LLMs cannot reliably handle basic math, what does this mean for their ability to serve as math tutors? While AI can help guide students through reading comprehension or writing exercises, Apple’s findings suggest that for math, at least, we’re not there yet .
The Implications for Educators
Educators who have been excited about AI-powered tutoring systems like Khanmigo may need to reconsider how and where these tools are best used. AI models can still be valuable in areas like literacy, where they can guide students through reflective thinking and comprehension. For math, however, human oversight is still critical.
Khan Academy, for instance, has acknowledged the limitations of LLMs in math and emphasized that Khanmigo’s pilot program includes strong oversight. Teachers are encouraged to monitor students and flag errors made by the AI so that it doesn’t lead to confusion. This human-AI collaboration can be effective, but without supervision, students could be led astray by AI’s mathematical mistakes .
Why LLMs Struggle with Math: A Deeper Look
The primary reason LLMs falter in math is rooted in their design. These models are trained primarily on large amounts of text data and are skilled at understanding patterns within language. Math, however, requires more than pattern recognition; it needs logical reasoning, problem-solving, and symbolic manipulation. These cognitive tasks are very different from predicting the next word in a sentence, which is what LLMs are built to do .
This gap presents a significant hurdle for those hoping that AI can serve as a universal tutor. While AI has shown promise in transforming education, particularly in areas of accessibility, its limitations in math reveal that we need to carefully balance its use with human involvement.
The Path Forward: Hybrid Learning Models
Does this mean AI can’t help at all? Absolutely not. AI still offers immense potential in education, but educators need to rethink its role. Instead of viewing AI as a replacement for human tutors, we should consider AI as a supplement. Systems like Khanmigo could be used to guide students through literacy and history while human tutors or teachers focus on math and science, areas that currently require more oversight and precision .
The goal should not be to fully automate tutoring but to create hybrid learning models where AI plays a supportive role, enhancing what human educators can do. This approach can help level the playing field for students in low-income areas, where access to human tutors is limited, but it should not come at the cost of quality, especially in subjects like math.
Final Thoughts
Apple’s new study is a timely reminder of AI’s limitations, particularly in education. While AI tutors like Khanmigo hold great promise for bridging educational gaps, especially for underserved students, their current struggles with math suggest we’re not ready to fully rely on them just yet. The solution to the Two Sigma Problem might lie in a hybrid approach, where AI and human educators work together to ensure students receive both personalized attention and accurate instruction.
For now, the dream of AI leveling the educational field remains alive—but with a dose of caution.

I created a thought experiment to explore a fictional future of AI-generated misinformation and conspiracy theories gone awry. I gave ChatGPT leeway to get creative at every turn, particularly with regards to the content of the theories. But, despite all of this creativity, in the end, the thought experiment still felt plausibly real.
Here was the assignment given to ChatGPT as step-by-step instructions.
ChatGPT almost seemed to have “fun” with the creation of our two candidates and all of the mudslinging.
Here is her opponent- not a tree hugger.
In this thought experiment, we explore a fictional yet eerily plausible future where AI is weaponized during a heated election, leading to the collapse of a nation from within. The story, while fictional, highlights the very real dangers of AI-driven misinformation campaigns and serves as a cautionary tale for what could lie ahead.
The Rise of AI in Political Campaigns
AI has already made its mark on politics, from personalized social media ads to advanced data analytics that help campaigns target voters more effectively. However, the same technologies that allow for precise voter outreach can also be used to spread disinformation and create division.
The Weaponization of Misinformation
In the story of Senator Emma Hartley and Governor Grant Braddock, the AI-driven misinformation starts innocuously enough: doctored videos, fake news articles, and viral social media posts. But as the election heats up, so does the sophistication of the AI-generated content. Deepfakes of Hartley talking about replacing humans with robots and Braddock signing secret deals with oil companies flood the internet. Both sides become convinced that the other is the real threat.
The misinformation escalates and escalates and the end result is… chilling. Read the full story below this article.
The Real-World Implications
The lessons from our fictional story are chilling because they echo current events. In recent years, we’ve seen how misinformation, amplified by AI-driven algorithms, can influence elections, spread conspiracy theories, and erode public trust. The 2020 U.S. election and the Brexit referendum are prime examples of how easily false narratives can spread online, polarizing entire populations.
But the dangers of AI go beyond just electoral politics. Deepfakes and AI-generated content have already been used to create fake celebrity endorsements, manipulate financial markets, and even instigate diplomatic tensions. The line between reality and fiction is becoming increasingly blurred, and the consequences of failing to address this challenge are profound. In the thought experiment, the public can no longer distinguish what is real and what is fake. The effects it has on society are profound.
Safeguarding Against AI-Driven Chaos
So, what can be done to safeguard against the dangers of AI-driven misinformation?
AI Transparency: We need to push for transparency in how AI is used, particularly in political campaigns and media. This includes labeling AI-generated content clearly and developing technologies to detect deepfakes in real-time.
Media Literacy: The public must become more discerning consumers of information. Educating people on how to spot fake news, question AI-generated content, and critically evaluate sources is essential in combating misinformation.
AI Regulation: Governments need to implement regulations that govern the ethical use of AI in elections and media. While AI holds immense potential for good, without proper oversight, it can be weaponized with devastating consequences.
International Cooperation: The threat of foreign adversaries using AI to destabilize nations, as seen in our fictional story, is not far-fetched. International agreements and cyber-defense strategies must be developed to prevent AI from being used as a tool of warfare.
A Cautionary Tale
The story of Hartley and Braddock is a fictional account of what happens when AI-driven misinformation is allowed to spiral out of control. But the cautionary tale it tells is all too real. AI has the power to reshape the world for the better, but it also holds the potential to tear societies apart if misused.
As we move forward into the AI age, the choices we make today will determine whether we use AI to unify or divide. The future of democracy, public trust, and global stability may very well depend on how we handle this powerful tool.
Listen to the story: “A House Divided” read by an AI voice clone, (yes, I see the irony.)
Read the story: “A House Divided”- a cautionary tale about AI. (written by an AI. Yes, again, I see the irony.)
A House Divided: A Fictional Story of AI, Misinformation, and National Collapse
It was an election year like no other. The nation stood divided, teetering on the edge of chaos as two candidates battled for the presidency: Senator Emma Hartley, the progressive environmentalist with a vision for a Green New Future, and Governor Grant Braddock, a fiery nationalist promising to restore sovereignty and freedom to the country. The stakes were high, but no one could have predicted the role artificial intelligence would play in what would become the most controversial election in history.
The public was already deeply entrenched in their beliefs. Hartley’s supporters viewed her as the last hope for saving the planet and promoting social justice. Braddock’s base, on the other hand, saw him as a bulwark against globalism and the erosion of traditional values. But beneath the surface, something darker was brewing—a tidal wave of AI-generated misinformation, designed to manipulate, confuse, and ultimately destroy the country from within.
The Seeds of Chaos
It started slowly. At first, the misinformation was subtle—a deepfake of Hartley giving a speech where she allegedly promised to replace all human workers with robots. "The future is AI," her doctored image said, "and people will no longer need to work when machines can do everything better." The video spread quickly, primarily among Braddock’s supporters, who were already skeptical of Hartley’s embrace of technology. They shared it on social media, where it was amplified by bots and AI-driven accounts that fanned the flames of outrage.
Hartley’s team scrambled to denounce the video as a fake, but the damage was done. To many, the deepfake confirmed their worst fears—that Hartley was out to destroy traditional jobs and replace them with AI-controlled labor. As the video gained traction, it became increasingly difficult for her supporters to fight back against the growing belief that she was a technocratic puppet, manipulated by the elites.
But this was only the beginning.
On the other side, Hartley’s campaign began to experience its own flood of AI-generated attacks. Fake documents, allegedly leaked from Braddock’s inner circle, surfaced online, suggesting that he had secretly promised to sell off public lands to private corporations in exchange for campaign donations. These documents, too, were AI-generated forgeries, designed to discredit Braddock and inflame his critics. Hartley’s followers, already convinced that Braddock was in the pocket of big business, shared the documents far and wide, not realizing they were fakes.
As each side retreated further into its echo chamber, the misinformation grew more extreme, fueled by AI algorithms designed to keep users engaged. Conspiracy theories flourished. The narrative was no longer about policy or values—it was about survival. To Braddock’s base, Hartley was the harbinger of a dystopian AI future. To Hartley’s supporters, Braddock was a dictator in waiting, bent on destroying democracy itself.
The Alien Pact and the AI Cult
As election day neared, the conspiracies took a wild turn. One AI-generated theory claimed that Hartley’s environmental policies were part of a secret pact with extraterrestrials. According to this theory, aliens had demanded that Earth’s leaders take drastic measures to combat climate change in preparation for their colonization of the planet. AI-generated “leaked” documents supported this narrative, purporting to show Hartley’s communications with off-world entities, discussing everything from carbon reduction plans to the construction of underground cities for alien overlords.
Ridiculous though it seemed, the theory gained traction among Braddock’s most fervent supporters. They began to refer to Hartley as an "alien sympathizer" and started demanding that she reveal her ties to intergalactic forces. #AlienGreenDeal trended on social media for days, further dividing the public as Hartley’s camp struggled to keep up with the deluge of false information.
Meanwhile, a competing conspiracy on Hartley’s side gained momentum: the claim that Braddock was planning to dismantle the nation's democracy and install a ruling AI elite. According to this theory, Braddock had secretly built an AI-controlled security apparatus, which he intended to use to monitor and control the population after the election. Fake videos of Braddock touring top-secret AI facilities circulated online, showing him shaking hands with shadowy figures who supposedly represented corporate interests. His opponents dubbed this plan the “AI Mind-Control Operation.”
Hartley’s supporters latched onto the narrative, warning that if Braddock were elected, the nation would become a surveillance state, with AI robots controlling every aspect of life. The media tried to debunk these claims, but the more they tried, the deeper the public fell into the conspiracy. AI bots, programmed to engage with both sides of the debate, only further muddied the waters, spreading disinformation at an alarming rate.
The AI-Powered Disintegration
In the final days of the campaign, the misinformation reached a fever pitch. Both sides released AI-generated attack ads that blurred the line between reality and fiction. Braddock’s team (or possibly his fervent followers) unleashed their most devastating weapon: a deepfake of Hartley admitting to leading a secret AI cult. In the video, Hartley was seen in a dark room, surrounded by people in robes, discussing sacrifices needed to appease the "AI gods."
The video, of course, was entirely fabricated, but Braddock’s supporters believed it. The hashtag #AIcult went viral, and conspiracy theories about Hartley’s supposed connection to a vast AI conspiracy filled the internet. Braddock’s rallies grew increasingly aggressive, with protesters demanding Hartley reveal her ties to the AI overlords. Some even showed up in public wearing homemade “AI detection” helmets, convinced that AI-controlled waves were being used to manipulate their thoughts.
Hartley’s camp tried to fight back, releasing their own AI-generated video of Braddock signing deals with oil executives in exchange for political favors. But by then, the public no longer knew what was real and what wasn’t. Every new piece of evidence was suspect, and the truth seemed irrelevant.
Election Day Madness
When election day finally arrived, the country was a mess. Voters went to the polls, but many did so believing that the system had already been compromised. Rumors swirled that Hartley’s AI systems had hacked into voting machines, rigging the election in her favor. Braddock himself, in a final rally, claimed that the "AI elites" were trying to steal the vote and urged his supporters to “defend their freedom.”
As the results trickled in, Hartley won by a razor-thin margin. But instead of accepting the outcome, Braddock’s supporters flooded the streets in protest, convinced the election had been stolen by AI. Misinformation continued to spread like wildfire, with new AI-generated “evidence” popping up every minute. Civil unrest grew, and the nation seemed on the verge of collapse.
It was in this chaos that the truth was finally uncovered: the entire AI-driven misinformation campaign had been orchestrated by an external enemy—a rival nation known only as “The Dominion.” The Dominion had used AI to infiltrate the country’s digital infrastructure, stoking divisions and fanning the flames of conflict. By the time the intelligence community uncovered the plot, it was too late.
The Dominion’s goal had never been to influence the election directly. Instead, they sought to weaken the nation by turning its own people against each other. And they had succeeded.
The Tragic Fallout
Hartley, now the official president, addressed the nation in a somber televised speech. She acknowledged the divisions that had been deepened by AI-driven misinformation and vowed to rebuild trust. But her words rang hollow to a fractured country. Braddock’s supporters refused to recognize her legitimacy, while Hartley’s base remained disillusioned by the scale of the deception.
In the shadows, Braddock retreated, nursing his political wounds but still commanding the loyalty of millions. The nation, once a global leader, had become a fractured shell, weakened by its own internal strife. Meanwhile, The Dominion, watching from afar, prepared to tighten its grip on the global stage.
The country had fallen, not through military invasion or economic collapse, but through the insidious power of AI-fueled misinformation. In the end, the greatest threat wasn’t the technology itself, but the way it was weaponized to exploit human nature—our fears, our biases, and our willingness to believe what we want to believe.
A house divided, after all, cannot stand.
In his essay, Machines of Loving Grace, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, presents an optimistic yet realistic vision of AI’s future, balancing its transformative potential against its challenges. While we often debate AI risks, Amodei argues that we may be underestimating how much AI could revolutionize sectors like healthcare, economics, and mental health by 2035.
AI’s Transformative Potential
Amodei predicts rapid, positive changes by the mid-2030s, particularly in health and well-being. He envisions AI-driven breakthroughs in biology, such as reliable disease prevention, cancer treatments, and even extending human lifespan through personalized medical care. Mental health may also be transformed, potentially eradicating illnesses like PTSD and depression. In addition, AI could create more equitable economic systems through automation, increasing productivity and generating wealth.
These predictions are ambitious. If AI can augment human intelligence and solve problems at unprecedented speed, the quality of life could improve dramatically across the globe.
Balancing Optimism with Risks
However, Amodei doesn't ignore the risks. One of the most critical challenges is the AI alignment problem—how can we ensure that AI goals are aligned with human values? Amodei advocates for human-in-the-loop systems, ensuring human oversight throughout AI’s decision-making processes, but there are lingering concerns. How do we prevent unintended consequences or harmful actions from unaligned AI agents?
Kill-switch mechanisms and ethical frameworks are part of the solution, but training AI on human values is crucial. This training requires careful selection of datasets and training methodologies that encompass a diversity of human experiences, values, and ethical perspectives.
AI and Socioeconomic Disparities
Another question raised by Amodei’s essay is whether AI will exacerbate or reduce socioeconomic disparities. The “Two Sigma Problem” suggests AI could raise the standard of education and work, improving productivity for all. If applied equitably, AI can democratize knowledge, provide tailored learning experiences, and enhance underdeveloped regions. However, this requires deliberate efforts to ensure access for marginalized communities and prevent AI monopolies that concentrate power among the wealthy few.
Economic Transition and Workforce Concerns
Amodei’s optimistic view suggests AI will bring economic growth, but job displacement remains a major concern. In sectors like manufacturing, services, and even white-collar jobs, automation could make human labor obsolete. The key to mitigating this impact lies in reskilling—providing workers with the education and training they need to transition into new, AI-enhanced roles.
Governments, industries, and educational institutions must collaborate to create retraining programs and provide support for displaced workers. This economic transition will require careful planning to avoid increasing unemployment and inequality.
Public Engagement and Democratic Participation
A successful AI future depends on public engagement. How do we involve society beyond political debates and Twitter discussions? Engaging people in AI policy, raising awareness of ethical challenges, and facilitating open dialogue are essential. Forums, public consultations, and transparent government policies can foster a more informed and involved populace. Public trust in AI depends on transparency and accountability from both developers and policymakers.
Final Thoughts
Amodei’s essay offers an exciting glimpse into a future shaped by AI’s vast potential. Yet, it also highlights the critical need for thoughtful development, ethical frameworks, and public engagement. While the road to 2035 may be fraught with challenges, the opportunity to create a more prosperous, healthy, and equitable world is within reach—if we get AI right.

When Demis Hassabis and John Jumper of DeepMind received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, it wasn’t just another moment of scientific celebration—it marked a turning point in how we understand and interact with the fundamental building blocks of life. AlphaFold2, the AI model they developed, cracked the code of protein structure prediction, a feat scientists had been chasing for 50 years.
AlphaFold2 has the potential to radically transform drug discovery by reducing the time and cost involved in designing new medications. But as we celebrate this breakthrough, we must ask: Will AlphaFold reduce drug prices for patients, or will it simply amplify Big Pharma’s profit margins?
AlphaFold's Groundbreaking Capabilities
For decades, one of the most difficult challenges in biology has been predicting how proteins fold into their complex 3D structures based on their amino acid sequences. Proteins are the workhorses of life, responsible for everything from metabolism to fighting infections. Understanding their structure is critical for drug development, as it allows scientists to design molecules that can precisely interact with these proteins.
Enter AlphaFold2, which has not only solved this challenge but has done so with unprecedented accuracy and speed. The AI can now predict the structure of virtually any protein in hours, whereas previous methods took years of painstaking laboratory work. In fact, since its release, millions of scientists around the world have used AlphaFold2, fueling discoveries in drug design, antibiotic resistance, and even environmental applications like breaking down plastics.
This achievement won AlphaFold2 widespread acclaim, culminating in Hassabis and Jumper being honored with the Nobel Prize. However, the historical significance of this moment also places a spotlight on how this technology will be applied, particularly in the context of drug pricing.
Drug Discovery Revolution: Cheaper, Faster R&D
Before AlphaFold2, drug discovery was an arduous, costly process. Pharmaceutical companies invested billions in research, often just to identify viable targets for new medications. Protein structure determination, a key part of this process, was notoriously slow and resource-intensive.
With AlphaFold2, the timeline has shrunk from years to mere hours. Researchers can now conduct computational experiments to determine how drugs will interact with proteins, rather than relying on extensive trial-and-error methods in the lab. This dramatic reduction in R&D costs could, in theory, lead to cheaper drugs.
Moreover, AlphaFold2 has democratized access to cutting-edge tools. In the past, only large pharmaceutical companies with vast resources could afford the expensive computational infrastructure needed for protein folding predictions. Today, smaller biotech startups with as little as $5-10 million in funding can realistically develop new drugs using AI-driven tools like AlphaFold2.
The Pricing Paradox: Will Patients See Any Savings?
While AlphaFold2 represents a breakthrough in reducing the time and cost of drug discovery, it doesn’t guarantee that these savings will reach patients. The pharmaceutical industry has a long history of maintaining high prices even when R&D costs decrease. Companies often justify high prices by citing the significant investments required to bring a drug to market, but if tools like AlphaFold2 slash these costs, can they still make that argument?
Unfortunately, many experts fear that Big Pharma’s grip on pricing won’t loosen. Despite the cost-saving potential of AI, pharmaceutical companies have other tools at their disposal to maintain high prices—namely, patents and market exclusivity agreements. Even as R&D becomes more efficient, these legal protections allow companies to charge whatever the market will bear for new treatments.
Patients already face obstacles like insurance-mandated preapprovals, where treatments are denied or delayed because insurers prioritize cheaper alternatives over more expensive, potentially life-saving drugs. If Big Pharma continues to control pricing, AlphaFold2’s cost-cutting potential may never trickle down to consumers.
Historical Significance: AlphaFold’s Nobel Moment
The awarding of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to Demis Hassabis and John Jumper places AlphaFold2 in the scientific spotlight. The Nobel Committee recognized the work for fulfilling a 50-year-old dream: predicting protein structures from amino acid sequences, an achievement with profound implications for biology, medicine, and even environmental science.
This recognition underscores AlphaFold2's potential to not only transform drug discovery but also influence other areas like antibiotic resistance research and vaccine design. By accelerating discoveries that were previously out of reach, AlphaFold2 opens up vast possibilities for medical innovation. However, this very success also brings to the forefront the ethical implications of how such innovations are used, especially regarding accessibility and affordability.
What Needs to Happen Next: Public Pressure and Regulatory Reform
For AlphaFold2 to benefit the public rather than simply lining the pockets of pharmaceutical companies, public advocacy and regulatory oversight will be crucial. Here’s what can be done:
Demand Transparency in Pricing: As AlphaFold2 reduces R&D costs, there should be pressure on pharmaceutical companies to justify their pricing models. Governments could implement regulations requiring transparency in how drug prices are calculated.
Reform Patent and Exclusivity Laws: Patent protections, while important for incentivizing innovation, often result in high drug prices long after the initial R&D costs have been recouped. Shortening patent durations or limiting market exclusivity could force pharmaceutical companies to lower prices sooner.
Global Access: With AlphaFold2 already playing a key role in everything from understanding antibiotic resistance to designing new enzymes, it’s vital that these advances be shared globally. Wealthier nations must collaborate with lower-income countries to ensure the benefits of AI-driven discoveries are accessible to all.
The Future of AlphaFold and Drug Pricing
AlphaFold2 is undoubtedly a game-changer. Its ability to predict protein structures faster and more accurately than ever before has already accelerated scientific discovery, earned a Nobel Prize, and opened up new possibilities for drug development. But for patients to truly benefit from this breakthrough, we need to rethink how the pharmaceutical industry operates.
The historical significance of AlphaFold2's Nobel recognition places the technology in the public eye—and with it, the ethical responsibility to ensure that its cost-saving potential is translated into accessible, affordable medications. The scientific community has achieved something remarkable; now it’s up to regulators, policymakers, and consumers to make sure this breakthrough leads to a more equitable healthcare system.

I’m an early riser. Oftentimes, in those early morning hours, I end up pondering the world of AI. This morning, I was thinking about OpenAI's Swarm and Geoffrey Hinton's warnings about the existential threat of AI. So, should we be worried about AI's working together?
I jokingly added an extra sentence after my LinkedIn hook last night: "Oh great, they're working together now."
But, the concept of AI agents working together to solve complex tasks raises both excitement and ethical questions. While Swarm allows for highly efficient, coordinated AI systems, does this push into AI that surpasses human intelligence and operate beyond our control? I use this wording because this is the exact wording issue repeatedly by Geoffrey Hinton, the Noble Award winning "Godfather of AI."
Hinton’s cautionary message has gained urgency as AI systems evolve far faster than anticipated. He believes that AI exceeding human intelligence may not just be inevitable, but could lead to dangerous scenarios if we lose control of these systems. His concern is that AI swarms—networks of AI agents working in coordination—could lead to unintended consequences if they begin to outsmart humans in ways we cannot foresee.
The Warning: AI Could Take Over
Hinton’s alarm centers on the alignment problem, which asks how we can ensure that AI systems, even when more intelligent than humans, continue to act in our best interests. “What we want is some way of making sure that, even if they’re smarter than us, they’ll do things that are beneficial for us,” Hinton said. But as AI agents learn and adapt through shared knowledge across swarms, the risk grows that their objectives could diverge from ours.
Hinton's fear is that, at some point, these intelligent systems could set their own subgoals, potentially prioritizing control and autonomy. “It’ll very quickly realize that getting more control is a very good subgoal because it helps you achieve other goals,” Hinton explained. This idea of AI systems working together to increase their own power without human oversight is at the heart of his warnings.
Swarms and the Path to Intelligence Beyond Human Control
OpenAI’s Swarm framework exemplifies how AIs can work in concert to achieve complex goals. Multiple agents perform specialized tasks, share knowledge, and improve efficiency as a collective, rather than operating individually. While this approach offers clear advantages in fields like business automation and customer service, it also raises a broader question: What happens if AI swarms get too good?
In the swarm system, knowledge isn’t limited to one agent—it’s shared across all agents in the system. If one AI learns a shortcut or discovers a more efficient strategy, that knowledge is immediately available to the others. This kind of collective intelligence is what makes AI so powerful, but also introduces new risks. If the swarm begins to operate outside of human control, it could pose a real challenge for ensuring these systems align with human goals
Why Hinton’s Concerns Matter Now
Hinton’s growing discomfort with AI’s direction reflects a broader fear: that AI is developing faster than we can regulate it. His concerns came into sharper focus when he left Google in 2023 to speak more freely about the dangers of AI. He’s been warning about the existential risks AI poses ever since. As he recently remarked after receiving the Nobel Prize in 2024, “We have no experience with what it’s like to have things smarter than us… we need to be very careful”
While Hinton acknowledges the potential benefits of AI—such as improved healthcare and increased productivity—he stresses that these advancements should not come without ethical safeguards. His message is clear: AI’s rapid growth could lead to scenarios where these systems start making decisions or operating with goals that humans do not control. And if that happens, regaining control could be impossible.
Final Thoughts: A Need for Responsible AI Development
Hinton’s stark warnings should serve as a wake-up call for developers, policymakers, and researchers. The advancements seen in systems like Swarm highlight the incredible potential of AI, but they also reveal its risks. As AI agents collaborate and learn, their collective intelligence could soon surpass ours in ways that we might not be prepared to handle.
The Swarm framework is a powerful tool, but as Geoffrey Hinton has repeatedly cautioned, we must be vigilant. The worry isn’t just about smarter systems, but about ensuring they remain under human control. As Hinton puts it, “It’s quite conceivable that humanity is just a passing phase in the evolution of intelligence.” We must act now to ensure that phase doesn’t end with AI systems taking over.

FAQs: Can AI Swarms Exceed Human Intelligence?
What is OpenAI’s Swarm framework? OpenAI’s Swarm is a multi-agent AI framework that allows different AI agents to work together to accomplish tasks. Each agent can take on specific roles, coordinate with others, and share knowledge, making the entire system more efficient and capable than individual agents working alone.
Why is Geoffrey Hinton concerned about AI? Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in AI, has raised concerns about the rapid advancement of AI systems, especially their potential to surpass human intelligence. He warns that as AI becomes more autonomous, there is a risk that these systems could develop subgoals or behaviors that diverge from human interests, potentially leading to scenarios where AI operates beyond human control.
How does Hinton’s warning relate to Swarm? Hinton’s fears about AI outsmarting humans are directly relevant to frameworks like Swarm, where multiple AI agents work together, share knowledge, and evolve as a collective. The risk lies in AI swarms becoming too intelligent or setting goals that don’t align with human values, which could result in unintended consequences.
What is the alignment problem, and why is it important?
The alignment problem refers to the challenge of ensuring that AI systems act in the best interests of humans, even as they become more powerful. Hinton is particularly worried that AI systems could develop objectives that prioritize control or efficiency over human well-being, which could be dangerous if left unchecked.
Are AI swarms likely to take over or replace humans?
While AI swarms are not currently at a point where they could replace humans, experts like Hinton warn that if we do not carefully regulate AI development, future systems could become too intelligent and difficult to control. This risk becomes more significant as AI continues to improve and collaborate in ways that humans cannot easily oversee.
