On today's episode, we'll be talking to Vondell Pilcher. In his own podcast "Beyond The Stutter" he works to give individuals a voice to those who are enslaved by their speech challenges. Pilcher and his co-host Antoine share to inspire and motivate people with their personal stories and insights on overcoming speech impediments, dysfluency & stuttering. According to the DSM-5 dysfluency is defined as disruptions in the normal fluency and timing patterns of speech that are not typical for a person's age and language skills. This disorder is characterized by symptoms like repetitions of sounds or syllables, broken words, filled or unfilled pauses, blocks in speech flow and excessive muscular tension in facial or bodily movement. These disfluencies may cause anxiety about speaking or limit effective communication. Although about 5% of all children stutter at some point in their lives, about 1% continue to stutter lifelong. Williams is the first NASCAR driver openly diagnosed on the autism spectrum, and one of four black race car drivers currently competing in NASCAR. Over the course of his NASCAR career, Williams' cars have often sported blue paint schemes with the blue autism puzzle pieces to symbolize his diagnosis on the spectrum and to raise awareness.
