Luke 21:5-38

The Savior’s people are to live in light of the end of all things. More often than not this subject throws us off, can be hard to understand, so we tend to just ignore what the Bible says. But in Luke 21 Jesus is shepherding His own. He gives signs that we are living in the last days and signs of what to look for regarding THE last Day. But it’s not so we can just over concentrate on the future, but know how to live body and courageously for the King here in the present.

With our entry into verse 28 we head into Luke’s third and last major section of his gospel. Jesus has now arrived in Jerusalem to accomplish the salvation that has been anticipated and written about in the OT. Jesus enters as the King of Kings who will make possible the peace with God we need. But the triumph of His entry will give way to the tragedy of rejection. Jesus in kindness and with great love gives the verdict that all who reject the Son will face the just judgment of God. We learn from these verses that despite his rejection by many, Jesus is God’s promised King.

While there is most definitely a future aspect to the return of King Jesus and the arrival of His kingdom, that doesn’t mean there is no present tense reality to it. Entry into God’s Kingdom is Bible talk for eternal life / salvation language. So the language of Jesus answering the question about when His Kingdom will come has everything to do with you and with me. The only way we can be prepared to meet King Jesus when He returns on that future day is by entering His Kingdom now, today, in the present. Using a parable, a truth from children, and an interaction with a Rich Ruler, Jesus teaches us that entry into God’s Kingdom is available to all who come to Him like a child.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Throughout the Bible we discover that God has very kindly not left us on our own when it comes to our families. He has made clear to us what will bring Him honor and glory in our parenting. In a nutshell, we are shown that teaching or children about God, loving God, discipling our children to fear God properly is a parent’s privilege. This has application directly in our homes and for the Jesus family to which we belong. This sermon further grounds our value for seeking to equip parent’s to be the primary discipler of their children and explains why we value having children in the worship service. Main Idea—It is a parent’s privilege to love God and love Him in front of their children.

Psalm 1:1-6

This morning we do something different. Approaching a new year we want to help families with children in the service. We preach Psalm 1 in a way that is aimed at children and gives pointers as to how the children can be Bible treasure hunters. Main idea from Psalm 1—True happiness is found in God and His Word.
