The hardware is usually identical. The titanium screw at a £3,000 practice and an £8,000 practice is often the same component from the same manufacturer. The price reflects whether the clinic spent the time and specialist hours to assess your bone, gums, bite, and surrounding teeth before placing anything permanent.

What should a dental implant assessment include? 
A proper assessment includes a cone beam 3D scan (not a flat X-ray), pocket depth measurements around all teeth in the mouth, a bite analysis, and a full review of every tooth near the implant site. If any of these steps are skipped, the clinic is assuming your mouth is suitable rather than confirming it.

How do I know if a dental clinic is cutting corners on implants? 
Ask: "What does your pre-implant assessment involve?" A thorough clinic will describe a specific process including 3D scanning and a full gum evaluation. A clinic cutting corners will describe a consultation, a standard X-ray, and a price. Being told you are suitable for implants in the same first appointment, without scanning, is a warning sign.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure but no pain. Most patients describe the discomfort afterwards as far less than expected, more of a dull ache than anything sharp. Fear of pain delays treatment far more than the procedure itself ever justifies.

Am I too old for dental implants? 
Age is not the deciding factor. Bone quality, gum health, and overall medical suitability are what determine candidacy. Patients well into their 80s have received implants successfully and gone on to eat what they wanted without restriction.

What if I don't have enough bone for dental implants?

When dental work keeps failing, the cause is almost never the individual tooth. It is usually something running underneath that has not been addressed: gum disease silently dissolving bone, a bite placing excessive force on specific teeth, or a structural weakness that has been compounding for years.

What is gum disease and can you have it without knowing? 
Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. You can have advanced gum disease right now with no pain, no bleeding, and no idea it is happening. A visual check at a standard dental appointment is not the same as a proper periodontal assessment, and most patients have never had the second one.

Is there an alternative to dentures?

Q: Is saving a tooth always better than getting a dental implant?
A: A natural tooth with healthy bone and a genuine long-term outlook is always the right choice to save. But a tooth that has failed repeatedly under treatment, or sits in significantly compromised bone, is not the conservative option to keep. Continuing to repair it spends the bone that an implant will eventually need.

Q: How do you know when a tooth is worth saving versus removing?
A: Three questions determine it: Has the tooth had a full periodontal assessment measuring bone levels around every surface? How many times has it been treated in the last five years, and what was the outcome each time? And how much bone remains around the root on a 3D scan? Without those answers, you do not yet have the clinical information needed to make the decision.

Q: Why does waiting to remove a failing tooth make the implant harder?
A: Every month a failing tooth stays in the jaw, the surrounding bone continues to deteriorate. What may have been a straightforward implant site two years ago becomes a complex grafting case today. The window for a simple, clean solution closes quietly, and most patients only find out when a specialist tells them the treatment they need is now twice as involved.
