Episode 103: Depeche Mode - Violator (1990) Part 1

Yes, that's right; Brian and Sarah last discussed Depeche Mode a mere two episodes ago. However, one of the most important and beloved albums in our hosts' entire record collection just celebrated its 30th anniversary, so there was no way to stop them from selecting Violator for their next in-depth analysis! And because the album is so important to them-- and because they don't want to release a 3-hour episode!-- they only cover the Album History and Personal History sections in this episode.

Part 1 - Album History Brian and Sarah start their examination of Violator with the release and chart history, and then go on to share the story behind the making of Violator and why both the process and the people involved were different from previous recording sessions. They then spend some time looking at where Depeche Mode was at this point in their career and how their career had progressed, especially regarding their status and popularity in America. This leads to them discussing the famous Wherehouse incident in Los Angeles the day of Violator's US release. They also share several reviews, including one Sarah found in an old letter from Brian!

Part 2 - Personal History Our hosts are delighted to kick off the Personal History section of the episode by playing a message sent in via Speakpipe (see link below!) by friend of the show John Justice, who was kind enough to share an excellent memory related to Violator, in particular the World Violation tour that supported it. This leads Brian and Sarah to share their own story about their World Violation concert experience, which was very memorable for them both, but not for the reasons they had hoped it would be! As for the history of getting the album, Violator seems to be one of the rare instances where Sarah not only bought the album herself, but has a very specific memory of doing so! Brian, on the other hand, has a specific-- but more traumatic-- memory related to not owning the album!
