  • PAHO Media Update May 19 2021 2
Pointing out that only 3% of people in Latin America and the Caribbean have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, Dr. Etienne asserted that the shortage of vaccines is a “symptom of our region’s overdependence on imports for essential medical supplies. Less than 4% of medical products in use during the COVID response have come from the region.”

  • WHO Media Update on Covd19 17 May 2021
For the second week in a row there has been a global decline in cases and deaths from COVID-19. There’s a huge disconnect growing where in some countries with the highest vaccination rates, there appears to be a mindset that the pandemic is over, while others are experiencing huge waves of infection. The pandemic is a long way from over.
WHO has been responding to the surge in cases in India and other hotspots. Demand is currently so high that WHO needs immediate funding in order to sustain its technical and operational support to all countries – especially the most affected – involved in the present wave.
I want to reiterate the statement that was released by Unicef overnight, which outlines the huge shortfall in vaccine supply to COVAX. The surge in cases has compromised global vaccine supply and there is already a shortfall of 190 million doses to COVAX by the end of June.

  • WHO-AUDIO_Emergencies_Coronavirus_Press_Conference_14MAY2021 final 2
At present, only 0.3% of vaccine supply is going to low-income countries. Trickle down vaccination is not an effective strategy for fighting a deadly respiratory virus. India remains hugely concerning. But it’s not only India that has emergency needs. Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Egypt are just some of the countries that are dealing with spikes in cases and hospitalizations. Vaccine supply remains a key challenge, but this week I have been pleased to see leaders and manufacturers working to address some of these issues.

At virtual briefing, Dr. Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, and Dr. Howard Njoo, deputy chief public health officer, join federal ministers Patty Hajdu (health), Anita Anand (procurement) and Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs) to provide an update on the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic. They outline guidelines for a progressive reopening as vaccinations ramps up during the summer, which will allow people to attend small outdoor gatherings. As people receive their second doses ahead of the fall, indoor gatherings will then be allowed. Minister Anand also announces that Canada will receive a total of 4.5 million doses of Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines on the week of May 17 as Pfizer has agreed to move up deliveries scheduled for the week of May 24 due to the upcoming Victoria Day holiday.
