We wrap up our coverage of Mac And Me, everyone's favorite late-'80s legally-dissimilar E.T. brought to you begrudgingly by McDonalds! We say favorite because, somehow, it's not the only one. Before Jack can get to his fix for Mac, Joe dusts off our Lapsed Academic segment to break down 1987's South African late-Apartheid nightmare, Nukie. We dig into Mac And Me's production, break down who was responsible for this mess of a film and the director's later days as a jingoistic and Islamophobic author after 9/11, cover the basics of Apartheid (we're not a history podcast, but we swear this is relevant), ponder the reasons that Eric's dad isn't in the picture, and ask how the traumatizing animated film Plague Dogs should have ended. Oh, and we perhaps conjure a horrifying nightmare image melding Jack's fear of horses with possibly the worst person in American history. You're welcome/we're sorry.

We fulfill our very first listener request by tackling the movie no one would know about if it weren't for Paul Rudd committing to a bit for like 30 years on Conan O'Brien: Mac And Me! It turns out this is more than just a single scene and is actually an entire ripoff of E.T. meant to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. That feels like a Mad Lib. We break down what did and didn't work about this movie (you may be surprised), discuss cinema's rampant anti-clown biases, ponder the potential max speed of Power Wheels back in 1988, and dissect one of the most troubling and accidentally hilarious deleted alternate scenes we've ever seen. But first, we get a little weirder than usual and touch on ways we want to expand the show beyond our previous scope. Come get weird with us and a movie that may or may not have been a breaking point for us!

We completely forgot when the newest crop of Razzie nominations would be announced, so we're a bit late getting this episode out. As is tradition, we did our damnedest to avoid the actual nominations until we recorded to capture our real-time reactions. As a palette cleanser, we also talked about this year's Oscar nominations. Joe makes some predictions about the nominations before the reveal, we marvel at how weird it is that two major films this year feature an Oscar-nominated lead performance while being otherwise reviled, Jack unfortunately learns who Machine Gun Kelly is, we cover some truly bewildering nomination decisions, we revel in some truly outstanding performances/writing/directing that 2022 brought us, and Jack keeps things light with some dad jokes. Instead of fixing this script, Jack pitches a page-one rewrite that should make longtime comic fans very happy. We go over some of Marvel's First Family's weird changes and variations through history, cover more details about Trank's Twitter drama, bemoan the folly of the seemingly-ubiquitous 3rd Act Massive Superhero Fight, emphasize the importance of respecting source material (instead of worrying about whether you're making something silly), and revel in our shared love of Portishead while lamenting some of this film's soundtrack choices. Jack continues his distaste for Mark Millar, Joe goes on a rant about bad science, and we ask the big question: Would Galactus spoon up planets like fancy French cuisine? But first, of course, we jus had to cover some weird superhero sex stuff.

We cover the history of film adaptations of Marvel's First Family, from the rights-hoarding Roger Corman attempt to this most recent version. Watching four movies repeatedly while adapting to a new job and multiple post-holiday season birthday celebrations made it hard to put together a full script, but thankfully Jack is a giant comic nerd and has a cornucopia of information to pull from regarding a wide variety of Fantastic Four stories from myriad writers, some tidbits about their creation by Jack Kirby, as well as the carousel of writers that were involved in this particular project. We brought our dear friend Scott McGrath back on to 1) make each other watch another round of our guilty pleasure films, and 2) make up for the fact that his last guest appearance was for Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas. Scott brought Hackers (1995), Joe brought Gamer (2009), and Jack brought The Flintstones (1994). Jack learns something about how hacking and phone phreaking worked back in the 90s and also hears some other early Internet jargon, we all give Fisher Stevens' skateboarding prowess the appreciation it deserves, Joe causes permanent injury to his friends by uttering an unused working title for his movie, Scott reveals he would probably do whatever Ludacris told him to do, we gleefully revel in Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble nearly getting hanged by an angry mob, and we also lament the tendency of '90s filmmakers to end family movies with terrible musical choices.
