On this latest episode of Dermalogues, host Dr. Kerri Purdy is joined again by Dr. Mark Kirchhof for some Derm Myth-Busting. Kerri has been hearing from Residents looking for answers about some Derm Myths that are popping up on social media and elsewhere. Together, Kerri and Mark tackle some of the most common — and most talked about — myths in dermatology, from “topical steroid withdrawal” and “natural sunscreens” to “slugging,” “collagen supplements,” “beef tallow skincare,” and even “perineal tanning.”

Dr. Purdy and Dr. Kirchhof separate science from social media hype, giving residents practical, evidence-based ways to address the questions they’re hearing in clinic every day. They also take a look ahead at how AI could reshape dermatology practice in the near future.

Dr. Kirchhof is the Division Head of Dermatology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital, and the current President of the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA). His research focuses on immune-system signalling pathways in dermatology, and he previously served as Education Director at Queen’s University.

Kerri is thrilled to welcome Dr. Crystal Aguh, a true star in the world of dermatology and hair, to Dermalogues for a fascinating discussion about diverse hair, textured hair, hair loss and scarring and non-scarring alopecias. Dr. Aguh is an Associate Professor of Dermatology and Director of the Ethnic Skin Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Her area of research focuses primarily on skin conditions that disproportionately impact minority populations, with particular emphasis on scarring hair loss and hair care practices.

She is the co-author of the textbook "Fundamentals of Ethnic Hair: The Dermatologist's Perspective" and author of "90 Days to Beautiful Hair." She kindly joined us from Baltimore in the midst of preparing for American Thanksgiving. Dr. Kim is one of the top researchers worldwide in the study of patients with itch and other skin conditions. He is Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. He is also the Director of the Mark Lebwohl Center for Neuroinflammation and Sensation.

Welcome to our second segment of "Derm Detectives" on Dermalogues, the CDA's version of a true crime podcast!

Joining us today are two derm residents, Dr Janis Chang and Dr Mina Boshra. They will each present a complex dermatology case they've been involved with to see if they can stump our Derm Detectives, Dr Kerri Purdy and Dr Mark Kirchhof.

Dr Chang is a PGY-4 dermatology resident at the University of Ottawa, and Co-Chair of the CDA Residents and Fellows Society. She has an interest in complex medical dermatology and clinical teaching. 

And Dr. Boshra is a second year resident, also in the University of Ottawa Dermatology Program.  His research focuses are skin of color dermatology and 3D printing.
