In this interview, we talk with Adam Levenson and Ollie Glatzer of Somatone Interactive. Adam is the COO, and Ollie is a Sr. Producer. Both are musicians, composers, and game audio veterans. Somatone, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a worldwide leader in sound design, original music composition, voice production, and audio implementation. They support 15 full-time team members and several independent contractors and have credits to more than 1,000 games, including many top-sellers, across all genres. They work with AAA publishers and indie developers, in PC, console, mobile, casino, VR and more.
As this is “Cultivating a Career” month at DMN, Adam and Ollie were generous in their advice on this subject and all other questions that I put to them, including:
The musical backgrounds of Adam and Ollie.
The History and current scope of Somatone and it’s projects and clients.
“Cultivating a Career” – lots of great advice on demo reels, etc.
Somatone’s in-house composers and, do they work at a central studio, or from their home studios?
Do you record live music and if so, for which games?
Casino games – what are the tricks to creating addictive music?
What is the future of game audio? VR? Mobile? Indie developers?
and much much more!
Here is a quote about Adam from Charles Deenan on LinkedIn::
“Adam has a thorough understanding of interactive and emotional music. His relationships with many fantastic composers makes him a perfect source to get high quality, fitting music for any product. What sets Adam apart from others companies (providing similar services) is that he’s directly worked in the game industry for a long time in all capacities, gathering several highly acclaimed music/audio awards. On top of that, Adam is one of the smartest people you’ll ever meet. He “gets” what you’re after, and will always do virtually whatever it takes to make it happen. Highly Highly recommended.”
I would like to thank Richard Warp, a Producer at Somatone, for introducing us to them. Richard was one of our first Designing Music NOW Core team members and he is a frequent contributor on this site.
The interview is fast paced, funny, and full of great advice from both Adam and Ollie. We hope you enjoy it!
