  • Kicking On Rocks - Documentary Filmmaking Life With Brandon Brito

It's not often that a 22-year-old college senior gets funded to film a documentary in Cape Verde, but that's exactly what happened with Brandon Brito.

This past January, the now Boston College graduate spent 2 weeks on the island nation shooting his first extended length film about the soccer culture in the country and some of the hardships players and coaches experience while chasing their professional dreams. The documentary is called "Kicking on Rocks: Football in Cabo Verde" and it can be found over on Brandon's YouTube channel.

In this episode we talked about Brandon's love of filmmaking and how he finds joy in each part of the process. For this most recent documentary, there were dozens of logistical hurdles with filming in Cape Verde, from travel issues with sandstorms to language barriers, but it's this chaotic energy that gives Brandon a rush and keeps him coming back.

If you've ever thought about getting into film and making movies, this episode is the perfect opportunity to hear from someone who is just starting to break into the industry.

Big thanks to Brandon for joining this week. Hope you enjoy!!

  • Philly Kid - The Business of Creativity With Keenan Marshall of Draulhaus

Starting a creative agency as a 20-something is certainly not for the faint of heart. But when you grow up in the heart of Philadelphia, you're ready for that grind.

Well, at least you are if you're name is Keenan Marshall.

Keenan is the creative director and co-founder of the creative agency, Draulhaus. A company he started alongside two of his closest childhood friends. The three men admittedly knew nothing about starting a business or building an agency, but their love of each other and commitment to making work that they enjoy has them on the up and up.

In this episode Keenan and I talked about his biggest creative inspirations ranging from Nickelodeon to Spike Lee, the mentality that Philly has instilled in him, and the incredible support he has received from family and friends along the way.

If you want to work with Draulhaus or just simply keep up with what they're doing, check out their website at draulhaus.com or over on Instagram @draulhaus.

  • State of the Union - Peak Behind the Curtain Into My World

I moved this week. After 5+ years (and 30+ closet podcast episodes) in the same apartment, I finally moved. And because Comcast is the devil and I've been without internet, it felt like a good opportunity to record a little solo episode.

I wanted to take this episode as an opportunity to be 1000% transparent with everything I've been working on for the last year and a half. It's very easy for people who are already uber successful to look back on when they were building something and sugarcoat how easy it was or gloss over the details. I, however, have been writing and podcasting and making shit for the internet now for a year and a half. I'm right in the midst of trying to build and grow something.

For anyone else who is doing the same, I thought it might be beneficial to share my progress. So, that's exactly what you get in this episode.

    • Podcast progress - What I've seen so far for total listens of Destination Different. Plans for how I hope to continue to grow it.
    • Email newsletter progress - The ebbs and flows of subscriber numbers and open rates. How I hope the rebrand finally gives it some structure.
    • Blog progress - Pivoting away from something that felt so perfect just 18 months ago. What does blog traffic even mean?
    • Social media progress - The difficulties of growing an audience on social media and how not to overextend yourself.
    • Lessons learned from creating on the internet - Patience, consistency, distribution vs. creation, and more patience.
    • Hopefully this episode is valuable to anyone out there who is trying to build and grow a business, or just simply make content for the internet.

      Enjoy!

    • Beneficial Pain - Seeing Pain Differently With Billy Wingo & Devin Harvin

2020 hasn't been the best. I don't think there's any denying that. But on today's episode we've got two gentlemen who are spreading the good word of turning negatives into positives.

Billy Wingo and Devin Harvin join us on the show this week. They are the CEO and COO of an organization called Beneficial Pain. Along with a few other friends from their Baltimore high school, the two of them helped start the non-profit after Billy was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2019.

Beneficial Pain's mission is to reshape the mindset around pain. The foundation is built upon sharing narratives and utilizing resources to support those who not only redefine pain, but also embrace “failure.” Just this past month, the org launched their first-ever scholarship program where they awarded 6 high school seniors $1000 toward their college experience.

If you want to learn more about what Billy and Devin are up to with Beneficial Pain be sure to check out their website at beneficialpain.com and follow along over on IG @beneficial_pain.

    • Clothing With A Cause - Okay, That's Enough With Camille Ramirez

Camille Ramirez first started making custom creations just so she had something personal to wear while she traveled the world. Since then, she has turned that love of statement pieces into a clothing brand with the power of strong POV behind it. In December of 2018 Camille launched Okay, That's Enough with a sweatshirt that read "Don't be a racist" and a necklace that read "Fuck Trump" and over the last 18 months she has continued to expand upon that line of provocative apparel with designs and statements.

Sick of a world where a school shooting or a violent protest disappeared with the news cycle, Camille wanted her brand to help extend the conversation around important social causes. After recently attending a Black Lives Matter protest in her hometown, Camille went back to the drawing board and released a shirt with the expression "Anti Racist Social Club," which has quickly propelled the growth of the brand.

In this episode we talked all about building a clothing company from scratch, the MANY headaches and hiccups along the way, avoiding the grammar police, and who would be the ideal celeb to rock an Okay, That's Enough shirt. Be sure to keep up with what Camille is doing over on Instagram @okaythatsenough.co

Unreal episode. Camille is a gem. Give it a listen!

    • Getting Reps - The Business of Fitness With Malik Mayweather of Unconquered Fitness

Malik Mayweather is a fascinating individual. He had offers to play both Division 1 baseball and football coming out of high school and ultimately landed at the University of Miami where he suited up at wide receiver.

After chasing his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL about as hard as he possibly could, Malik decided to lean on his athletic upbringing for the next phase of his life. That meant starting a fitness brand called Unconquered Fitness. He started doing personal training and sport-specific athletic training, and slowly but surely the business began to take off.

He is now returning to Miami to get his Masters degree, while Unconquered Fitness continues to expand its footprint beyond the Memphis area were the brand got its start.

Be sure to keep up with what Malik is doing over on IG at @_ucfitness and on their website unconqueredfit.com. He's even offering remote training opportunities. Reach out and start getting your body right!

    • Poppin' Bobbles - Building Stuyvesant Champagne With Founder Marvina Robinson

Some of us drink champagne. Others help bring it to the masses. Marvina Robinson somehow manages to do both. What started as a love of bubbles during her college years has since turned into a full time career for absolutely delightful entrepreneur.

Marvina started Stuyvesant (and named it after the Brooklyn neighborhood she grew up in!) with the hopes of making it the house champagne at the champagne bar she planned to open in late 2020. But when COVID-19 shifted those plans, Marvina shifted right along with it and released her product to the masses... it was an immediate hit!

In this episode we talked about the process of finding grapes to make her champagne, her BIG dreams for the company, and which artist is going to release the first song with Stuyvesant in the lyrics.

If you want to get your hands on some of Stuyvesant's deliciousness, check out their website at stuyvesantchampagne.com. And be sure to follow along over on Instagram @stuyvesantchampagne

    • Dirty 30 - Solo Sode on the Future of Destination Different

Today marks the 30th episode of Destination Different and whewwww how the time flies. We tried and we tried and we tried to land a guest for this week, but the scheduling gods just didn't make it work.

So instead host Ryan Dunn used this week to explain his vision for the direction of the show, the types of guests he's targeting moving forward, and took the chance to share some insanely stupid ideas you could see coming soon.

      Hope you enjoy! Stay weird.

    • Pass, Shoot, Score - NHL Hockey With Kevin Hayes of the Philadelphia Flyers

Didn't think I'd ever see the day we'd have an NHL superstar on Destination Different, but here we are.

Today's guest on the show is Kevin Hayes, center for the Philadelphia Flyers. Hayes spent time in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers and the Winnipeg Jets before signing a 7 year / $50 million contract with the Flyers last summer.

In this episode we covered a little bit of everything from Kevin's childhood dream of growing up to play in the NHL, the day-to-day of being a professional athlete, and even some of his off-ice antics.

Awesome episode. Super down-to-earth guy. Gives you just about anything you'd want to know about being a pro hockey player.

      Hope you enjoy!

    • Art of the Ocean - Epoxy Resin and Salt Ponds With Claire Hodson

I learned a new thing in this episode! Actually, I learned a lot of new things. For starters, you can make some UNBELIEVABLE art out of resin and that's exactly what our guest on the show use to make some ocean-inspired masterpieces.

Claire Hodson started  doing resin art as a way to make a gift for her boyfriend when she didn't have any money. But what began as a hobby has now turned into a pretty lucrative side business. Claire grew up in a coastal Rhode Island town and her love of the ocean touches every part of her life from her art to her "day job." We talked about the constant battle between creativity and working a traditional job, making her own surfboards, and I even learned a few things about the effect of damaged sewer systems on salt ponds.

Fantastic episode, especially for anyone pursuing a creative side hustle. Check out all of Claire's art over on Instagram at @claire.p.hodson
