ECONOMIC SOLDIERS AMIDST PANDEMIC – Entrepreneurship
In this episode of ECONOMIC SOLDIERS AMIDST PANDEMIC, we explore the realities of entrepreneurship during one of the most disruptive economic periods in recent history—the COVID-19 pandemic.
I engage in conversation with a young Kenyan entrepreneur, Abigail Namanje, a 21-year-old businesswoman and Human Resources Management student at KITTIS, who has already built approximately two years of experience in entrepreneurship through her footwear business dealing in sneakers, rubber shoes, and boots.
Despite her young age, Abigail represents a generation of determined youth navigating both education and enterprise in a challenging economic environment. In this discussion, she shares her lived experience of building a business during a pandemic period marked by reduced consumer purchasing power, rising operational costs, and increased taxation pressure.
The conversation goes beyond motivation and success stories. It examines the real struggles faced by young entrepreneurs, including:
- The pressure of maintaining business stability in uncertain economic conditions
- The impact of taxation and rising costs on small businesses
- The reality of balancing survival, reinvestment, and personal livelihood
- The misconception that entrepreneurship is an easy escape from employment challenges
- The role of persistence, passion, and discipline in sustaining a business
We also reflect on broader economic questions affecting young people in Kenya today, including unemployment, government fiscal pressures, and whether economic transformation lies primarily with the youth or with structural policy systems.
Abigail offers personal insights drawn from her journey, emphasizing persistence, passion for one’s work, and the importance of understanding customer needs. At the same time, she highlights the structural challenges that make entrepreneurship difficult for many young people, especially in industries affected by low demand fluctuations and high taxation environments.
This episode challenges the romanticized view of entrepreneurship and instead presents it as a demanding but meaningful path that requires clarity, resilience, and strategic focus.
ECONOMIC SOLDIERS AMIDST PANDEMIC is a platform dedicated to exploring real economic experiences, youth entrepreneurship, and the realities of survival and growth in changing economic landscapes.
