Activist, diplomat and politician Andrew Young said it best, when he told CNN after George Floyd’s murder in June of 2020: “I think the Black Lives Matter movement is probably the first worldwide human rights movement that I've seen. I mean, everybody in the world saw George Floyd die. And there were people marching for Black Lives Matter in New Zealand, in Europe and Africa, some parts of Latin America. Because the authority of law enforcement is almost a problem everywhere.”
Does the world of US professional sports realize how much work there is to be done, to produce equity? Let’s find out.
I’ll take each sporting association one by one, and unfortunately I don’t have time to do them all. I know that golf, tennis and many other sports should also be looked at, but I could only do so many of them. I’ll start with an important statistic in each sport that emphasizes the issues I’m talking about today.

I am excited to welcome another great guest to the Determine Our Future podcast. Olly Pike is the director of Pop'n'Olly, an LGBTQ+ “Edutainment” resource for children, parents, careers and primary teachers. I love the word “Edutainment” and I think it’s perfect for what Pop’n’Olly is doing. Olly and his team have written and illustrated six inclusive children's books and accompanying YouTube videos, which are being used in primary schools across the UK and beyond, to help teach about equality and diversity.

Ida B. Wells was a journalist and Civil Rights activist, who inserted herself into some of the most dangerous situations a Black person could be in. She lived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when Jim Crow was still in full effect. Her work shed light on the lynchings, killings and other punishments wreaked on Black people by White people in the US, simply to intimidate all Black people. Ida’s search for the truth in these situations, and her work to spread this information to the public, make her an incredible person and one who shouldn’t be forgotten.

My Determine Our Future podcast has been so lucky to get wonderful guests with expertise in a variety of subjects. And my luck continues today! I’m happy to introduce Jasper Smith, who has been involved in the financial services arena for over a decade.  Jasper has held positions with Lincoln Financial Group, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch, Northwestern Mutual, and Prudential. He has also worked with a variety of non-profit organizations that focus on promoting financial literacy to underserved communities. He is a Certified Retirement Counselor or CRC. Jasper has also founded a financial empowerment initiative called The #BuildWealth Movement. 
With a passion for promoting financial awareness to the nation’s youth and under-served communities, Jasper donates countless hours as a Board Member for the Urban Financial Services Coalition San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. He was a 4-year letterman in Baseball and graduated summa cum laude from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University with a Bachelors in Business Administration. There have been 115 US Supreme Court Justices, over the country’s 230 years of existence. Five of them have been women. Okay, that doesn’t sound so great. But, since 1919 when women could practice law in the US, and since 1920 when the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in the US, out of the 47 Justices that have served, five of those have been women. That’s better, but at 11%, we can definitely do better than that. I’m excited to tell you about these amazing women, and how their lives and terms as a Supreme Court Justice affected the laws of the country we live in.

We might wonder how to effect change in our communities, in our children’s schools, and in other organizations that we belong to. In this episode, I look into the ways that nonprofits and people are creating policy and cultural changes that will benefit others. I was excited to listen to people who are not only experts, but care deeply about the work that they do.

I haven’t done any COVID episodes yet, frankly because my podcast is one way for me to be able to tackle different subjects and think of other things for a little while. Goodness knows we’re all surrounded by COVID news and realities every day. But this seemed like an important question: what did the CDC do differently during this pandemic, and why? Was there Trump administration interference in what is supposed to be an apolitical scientific entity that helps Americans through things like this?
