This teaching begins with a cry for mercy from a father for his demon-possessed son. Jesus casts out the demon. The disciples, however, were unable and they ask Jesus why. Jesus' answer provides a warning; we must be aware of the evils of our age to overcome the doubts and fears that threaten to crush us. Then our faith can blossom and grow. Fasting plays an important role in the process as it not only strengthens us but also reveals how strong the flesh really is.
