This short podcast series reviews the importance of biosecurity, our commitment to good animal health, and the impact infectious disease may have on a farm, and the industry. Our hope is that each conversation will provide producers with some useful information they can apply on their farm.
Our next discussion takes place with Dr. David Kelton, a veterinarian and researcher at the University of Guelph. Dr. Kelton’s research focuses on many different aspects of dairy cattle health and production. In 2015, he led the National Dairy Study, Canada’s first nation-wide study to gain insight into practices and decision-making on Canadian farms. Part of that study looked at biosecurity practices, and the diseases producers are aiming to manage or keep out of their herds. He and I sat down to discuss his perspectives on what farmers can do to minimize the risk of infectious disease entry and spread throughout a herd, and the potential impact these diseases can have.
