  • The Lead: What's at stake in this year's TN election?

In this episode of The Lead, get to know the star personalities of the Tamil Nadu polls, how the alliances stack up and what is at stake for the Dravidian majors— DMK and AIADMK— and the new entrant BJP.

Tamil Nadu is a unique state. It's here that the national powers are reduced to play a smaller and the regional satraps and the Dravidian parties take up the major role. This time in the absence of J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi, what will the election look like? Will V K Sasikala have a role to play? Can Chief Minister Edapadi Palaniswamy manage to hold power? Can Kamal Haasan be the disruptor or is it time for the DMK's sun to rise?
Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and welcome to the Lead by DH Radio.

Tamil Nadu Assembly has  234 seats which include 44 SC and 2 ST seats.
The 2016 election saw  74.24 % voter turnout and the return of the J Jayalalithaa led AIADMK to power but ever since the death of the matriarch the party has seen a tumultuous time. While, on the other side, the DMK has been waiting in the wings to take centre stage. Defined by the politics of language identity, the state is one among those uncoloured by the saffron party.

Ahmed: Today, we are joined by our special correspondent from Chennai, E T B Sivapriyan, to talk about the state and what's happening this year.
Hi, Sivapriyan. Welcome to DH Radio.
    E T B Sivapriyan: Hi.
Ahmed: Tamil Nadu is identified by the Dravidian majors— DMK and AIADMK. What about the other parties and alliances? Can you tell us who is whose friend?
E T B Sivapriyan: The DMK has stitched up a big alliance and that alliance has been continuing since 2017. They fought the elections in 2019. The DMK alliance consists of the Congress, the Left parties, the influential Dalit party Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, MDMK of Vaikao, Indian Union Muslim League and Manithaneya Makkal Katchi, another Muslim political party in Tamil Nadu...

  • From the Newsroom - March 23, 2021: Anyone above 45 years can get Covid-19 vaccine from April 1

In your evening news brief,  Anyone above 45 years can get Covid-19 vaccine from April 1; BJP President J P Nadda says in Assam that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been passed by the Parliament and will be implemented "in time" and a Bangladeshi court hands down death sentence to 14 Islamist militants for attempting to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina

    -----------------

With the Covid-19 surging across India again, anyone above 45 years will now be able to get the Covid-19 vaccine from April 1, Union minster Prakash Javadekar said on Tuesday.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken by the Union Cabinet, he said even people without comorbidity and above the age of 45 years, can get vaccinated.

He requested people entitled to get themselves registered to take the Covid-19 shot.

    ------------------

BJP President J P Nadda on Tuesday asserted that the Citizenship Amendment Act has been passed by the Parliament and will be implemented "in time".

Nadda after releasing the party's manifesto for the Assam elections said that the law, (which does not find a mention in the manifesto), is a central legislation and the Congress claims that they will not allow its implementation in the state, if voted to power, may be either "due to their ignorance or they are trying to fool the people of the state".

    --------------------

A Bangladeshi court on Tuesday handed down death sentence to 14 Islamist militants for attempting to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her southwestern constituency in 2000. All the convicts are operatives of outlawed Harkatul Jihad Bangladesh.

  • The Lead: All about Kerala elections

In this episode of the Lead, get to know the political landscape of Kerala, the changes in alliances, what are the issues driving the 2021 elections in the state and more.

Kerala, God's own country, blessed with natural beauty, the state is not behind any other in the country when it comes to political enthusiasm. The state, which saw the first democratically elected communist government in the world, has for the past years seen a rotation of power between the two alliances: LDF and the UDF. This time there is another claimant in the form of BJP. Will the UDF come to power following the rotation schema, will the LDF retain its hold or will the BJP be the disrupter. Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and welcome to the Lead by DH Radio.

Kerala Assembly has 140 seats and in 2016, 77.10 per cent of people cast their vote. 1,203 candidates threw their hats in the poll ring and 871 forfeited their deposits. With 91 seats the CPM-led LDF wrested power from the Congress-led UDF and formed the government with Pinarayi Vijayan being sworn in as the chief minister. The state has seen repeated floods and the health ministry led by KK Shailaja has battled outbreaks like the Nipah virus and is currently overseeing the Covid-19 pandemic, the handling has been well applauded but on the downside, the gold smuggling case has been a spoilsport to the government's track record.

Ahmed: Today, we are joined by our correspondent from Thiruvananthapuram Arjun Raghunath to tell about the state and what's happening this year. Hi, Arjun. Welcome to DH Radio.

    Arjun Raghunath: Hi

Ahmed:  How are the alliances stacked up in Kerala?

Arjun: The major change is that in the LDF, the Kerala Congress (Mani) is led by the founder-leader K M Mani son Jose K Mani has joined the LDF. He was with the UDF earlier...

Assam, the northeastern state famous for its teas and infamous for the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act protests in 2019, goes to the polls now. What hold for Assam, will be again be ruled by the Congress or will the BJP further solidify its hold there. Hi, this is Ahmed Shariff and welcome to the Lead by DH Radio.
