A gratifying and soul searching conversation with Dr. Azra Raza - i was fully immersed in her words that were carefully articulated either with scientific terms or lyrical poetry. Her own life balanced with medical catastrophes and poetic subtleties. We spoke about her curiosity of existence to her memorizing poems since a young age. She explained to us the different stages of a cancer cell, the different stages of the human heart. Widely peppered with her favorite verses and couplets, it is a treat to listen to her wisdom, her openness about the failure of cancer treatment, her hope of future treatment and her commitment to serve.
Azra Raza is the Chan Soon-Shiong Professor of Medicine and Director of the MDS Center at Columbia University in New York, NY. She maintains a busy clinical practice seeing 30-40 patients with MDS and acute myeloid leukemia weekly. In addition, Dr. Raza heads a well-funded, cutting-edge research lab. She is the recipient of multiple awards including The Hope Award in Cancer Research 2012 (shared with the Nobel Laureate Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn). In 2015, she was a member of the Founder Group at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, designing Breakthrough Developments in Science and Technology with President Bill Clinton. On December 1, 2015, Dr. Raza was part of a core group of cancer researchers who met with Vice President Joe Biden to discuss the Cancer Moonshot initiative. Dr. Raza’s research has been published continuously over the last three decades in high profile journals and her book, THE FIRST CELL: And the human costs of pursuing cancer’s last will be published by Basic Books on October 15, 2019.
