The Story of Dhruva (Part 1)

Among the many inspiring tales from the Puranas, few shine as brightly as the story of young Prince Dhruva. His journey is a timeless lesson in determination, devotion, and the power of faith. In this episode, we bring you the first part of Dhruva’s extraordinary life—how a child, only five years old, transformed rejection into divine strength.

The story begins with King Uttanapada, a descendant of Manu. He had two queens—Suruchi and Suniti. Suruchi was the king’s favorite, while Suniti, though virtuous and noble, was often neglected. Suniti’s son was Dhruva, a bright and innocent boy, who longed for his father’s love and affection.

One day, young Dhruva entered the royal court and wished to sit on his father’s lap. But Queen Suruchi stopped him harshly. With bitter words she told him, “If you wish to sit on the king’s throne or his lap, you must be born again through me. Only then will you have that right.” These cruel words pierced Dhruva’s tender heart.

Hurt and humiliated, Dhruva ran to his mother Suniti. Tears in his eyes, he told her everything. Suniti comforted him but spoke the truth: “My son, in this world, the only true refuge is Lord Vishnu. If you worship Him with all your heart, He will grant you a place that no one can ever take away.”

These words ignited a fire within the little boy. Dhruva resolved that he would seek Lord Vishnu Himself and ask for a place higher than any earthly throne. With childlike innocence but unshakable determination, he left the palace and walked into the forest to begin his search.

There, he met Sage Narada, who tried to dissuade him. Narada told him that he was too young, that the path of penance was far too difficult for a child. But Dhruva’s reply stunned the sage: “Respected one, my pain is so deep that I cannot rest until I see the Lord. Only He can heal my heart.”

Impressed by his determination, Narada gave him the sacred mantra to meditate upon and guided him in the methods of worship. Dhruva began his penance in the forests of the Himalayas. At first, he lived on fruits and roots, then only on water, and eventually he gave up even food and breath, immersing himself completely in the vision of Lord Vishnu.

This first part of Dhruva’s story shows us how even a child can rise above hurt and rejection to pursue the highest spiritual goal. His determination, purity, and devotion made him an example for all humanity. The name “Dhruva” itself became immortal, symbolizing the fixed, unwavering pole star in the heavens—a position earned through his devotion.
