◆Description
“A first-year trainee doctor, dreaming of living in London": for 11 episodes, this has been Soki’s standard opening line. This episode is dedicated to Soki’s dream of living and working as a physician in London someday in the future.
This time, our show has been graced by a special guest. An emergency physician, Dr. Watase was born in the U.S., grew up all over the world, graduated from a Japanese medical school, and then returned to the U.S., where he worked as a doctor for 13 years.
The cast members began by asking him about how language skills factor into a doctor’s success when working in an English-speaking country. Dr. Watase’s insight was surprising, unique, and profound. Language skills, he states, are not the most important factor. What, then, matters most? Throughout the episode, he reveals his many insights gained from decades of living abroad.
One thing that became apparent through this recording was that Dr. Watase is - besides being a highly skilled and intelligent doctor - a man with great acceptance who truly embraces people’s diversity. It was clear that speaking two languages and having worked as a physician in various cultural contexts greatly affected his way of thinking.
To all of our listeners who are interested in working as physicians (or otherwise) abroad, we present to you this multi-cultural, bilingual, charismatic ER doctor: Dr. Taketo Watase.
