“I am a mixture of a very friendly talking guy with a very intense belief that education is really important.” Dean, the guest of our 14th episode, speaks about himself as such. Dean, who is now an English teacher in Kyoto, is an educator from the U.S. with an intriguing history. After graduating from the ROTC program at his college and serving as a military officer for several years, he got a master’s degree in linguistics and moved to Japan. Shu and Dean met when Shu was in his fourth year at medical school. Shu considers Dean to be an important mentor, someone from whom he gained a lot of insight into language learning.
“Just because something is true doesn’t mean it should be true,” Dean states, underscoring his point that schools are the front line of social inequalities. It is evident that Dean, who has spent much of his teaching career fighting for a better education system, is a man of enormous passion.
