  • Afrezza’s Inhaled Insulin – One Solution to High Insulin Prices?

I have received many questions about insulin costs. The most common concern? The price of insulin and long-term affordability.

In this episode, I interviewed Michael Castagna, Chief Executive Officer of MannKind, the makers of the inhaled insulin about their 4 dollar a day insulin program.

What do you think about purchasing rapid-acting insulin for 4 dollars a day? It can be done assuming you use 36 units a day. Meaning your rapid-acting insulin for 30 days will cost you $120 a month. For some, this is less than their pharmacy co-pay for one prescription. Not to mention, if you are a good candidate for inhaled insulin, you might be able to take a break from injections.

The inhaled insulin discussion is a topic you will need to have with your healthcare professional. Remember never to change your dosing therapies or brands before discussing it with your healthcare professional. Besides, they need to be on board to write the prescription.

The 4 dollars a day offer from Afrezza is good for the first 1000 candidates. Here is a link to their affordable insulin program. If the interest in this program is high, the  plan will be extended. Don’t be discouraged by this late date.

If you have COPD, Asthma or are an active smoker, the inhaled insulin is not for you.

A new study published in the online journal Diabetes Care reports that intervention text messages can help those with type 2 diabetes improve their blood sugar levels. The study looked at Hispanic patients who were classified as low income. Dr. Addie Fortmann and her team at the Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute tracked 126 participants. Some received as many as three Dulce Digital intervention text messages over the six-month study. Others received only their regular care.

Those who received the text showed an improvement on their HbA1c tests (P = 0.03) with no other statistically significant secondary effects. Patients gave the intervention texts a high satisfaction rating.

These findings were published in Diabetes Care on June 9, 2017.

  • Diabetes Health in the News Podcast: Fast Food Linked to Industrial Chemical Consumption

Data from federal nutrition surveys have found that people who ate fast food in the last 24 hours were found to have high levels of certain industrial chemicals within their bodies. These chemicals are known as phthalates, and they are used when making plastic materials more durable and flexible. They do not occur in nature but are commonly used in soap, cosmetics, and food packaging.

This research suggests that the fast food industry is a primary source of phthalates, and the chemicals could get into food through machinery used in packaging and processing. Unfortunately, not much is known about the health consequences associated with these chemicals, and there is limited regulation to control them.

These findings were published in Environmental Health Perspectives in the April 2016 issue.
