Diary of a Risk Taker

In this episode we share our tips on how to prioritise, how to find a balance and how to juggle the struggle. How can you take risks when you have children financially dependent on you? The struggle is real and you can find a way to do all the things you want to do.

How do you become a responsible risk taker and not a reckless risk taker? From our decade long experience of taking both big and small risks, we share some of the steps we take when considering a risk in order to mitigate the impact and manage the outcome.

In today’s episode we talk about the power of mindset and knowing when to quit a risk. How do you know when to keep going and when to stop? We had a decision to make with the shop: should we carry on or throw the towel in. This is what we decided and how we made the decision.

Honestly, we can’t adequately describe how low we went with the shop. On the outside, it was a roaring success but on the inside we were just about holding it all together and on the verge of giving up. But we are still here to tell the tale…

It pushed us to the edge and continues to stretch us. We talk about how we got the shop and why we opened it. Not long after moving back to the UK and after listening to a lot of podcasts and rewind a lot of books, Ethan decided to quit his full time job and go 100% self employed. People thought we were crazy, but it felt like a very calculated and logical risk to us. Little did we know that a few months later, Covid-19 would come around and the world would come crashing down…

In this episode we talk about why we moved to Belgium and how we dealt with living in the moment and preparing for the future when the future looked so uncertain. It was hard! But looking back, we learned so many lessons (and had so many funny experiences!) in Belgium.

Having children is a huge risk. When, where and how many to have are big decisions. We always knew we wanted to have children, but a family history of infertility issues and the fact that we were both poor students about to go on a year abroad meant that we weren’t sure when. So, like always, we made some pretty crazy decisions, some big risks…

We got married after just 3 months of dating and we were both super young. Although it didn’t feel like it at the time, this was a huge risk and one that we feel has paid off. But there were so many things that could have gone wrong and these days, the odds of a successful marriage aren’t great. Here’s why we decided to get married and a few of the struggles we had while dating and newly-married.
