In this episode, I share how a lifelong habit of asking “why?” eventually led me to question some of the assumptions I had inherited about Christianity, culture, and Scripture. I explore contextualization, the ways culture shapes our expression of faith, and reflect on what happens when we start asking questions about the faith we've inherited—and whether some of what we’ve come to see as “biblical” might also be shaped by culture.
What if questioning isn't about rejecting our faith, but about understanding it more deeply?
Maybe we should keep asking why.
What does your Netflix profile say about you?
Mine has changed quite a bit over the years. From the Bollywood movies I grew up with, to the India-set shows, or American ones with Indians in them, that I find myself drawn to now, I started noticing that maybe my Netflix profile was telling me something about me, too.
In this lighter episode, I reflect on culture, memory, identity—and the unexpected ways pieces of our past, and the places we come from, continue to show up- even in the stories we choose to watch.
So… what does your Netflix profile say about you?
A shirt. A simple statement. And a reminder that identity doesn’t always fit neatly into one box.
In this episode, I reflect on what it means to be the daughter of immigrants and why embracing one part of who we are doesn’t have to mean rejecting another.
On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Sonia revisits a core memory from that day — a warning from someone that revealed how quickly identity can be reduced to assumption. It's a reflection on the word "they," how one person's actions can get projected onto an entire group and a reminder for us to see the individual standing in front of us.
What happens when the things that shaped you—your family, culture, faith, and traditions—don't always fit neatly into the world you've learned to live in?
In this first episode of Diaspora, Sonia Frazier shares the questions that led her to create this podcast and begins exploring what it means to examine the stories we've inherited, the faith we've been handed, and the ways we understand belonging.
This is a conversation about asking questions, making space for complexity, and discovering what happens when we give ourselves permission to look at our stories differently.
Welcome to Diaspora. If you've ever wrestled with where culture ends and faith begins—or wondered whether you have to leave part of yourself behind to follow Christ—you're not alone. This is a place where we journey together, exploring how to honor our cultures without compromising our faith, hold tradition with discernment, and leave behind a faithful legacy.

Diaspora: Exploring Faith, Culture, and Belonging
What happens when the culture that shaped you doesn't always align with the faith you're growing into?
Diaspora is…
Together we'll wrestle with questions of identity, tradition, race, assimilation, belonging, and the customs we've inherited—asking not what culture expects of us, but what God invites us into.
Whether you're the child of immigrants, part of a multicultural family, or simply seeking to understand how faith shapes identity, Diaspora offers thoughtful dialogue, practical wisdom, and encouragement for the journey. Because following Jesus doesn't erase our stories—it redeems them.
