This story follows the journey of Dick Whittington, a poor orphan who dreams of finding a better life in London during the time of King Edward the Third. After arriving in the capital, Dick is taken in by a kind merchant named Fitzwarren, where he works under the strict supervision of a mean-spirited chef. Despite these hardships, with the help of a supportive lackey, Dick learns to read and write, and forms a friendship with Alice, Fitzwarren's daughter. Troubled by vermin in his attic, Dick saves his nickels to buy a cat, which later turns out to be his ticket to fortune. When Fitzwarren's ship sails to Barbary, the cat's ability to chase away rats and mice pleases the local king and queen so much that they reward the crew with gold, making Dick wealthy. Returning to London, Dick marries Alice, becomes a Lord and eventually the Mayor of London, using his newfound wealth for philanthropy including building infrastructure and supporting education. The story ends with Dick living a happy and prosperous life with Alice and their children.
