The story revolves around Uncle Wiggily Longears, an adventurous elderly rabbit, who ventures out from his home one evening wearing his red, white, and blue-striped rheumatism crutch and tall silk hat. Ignoring warnings from Nurse Jane Fuzzy Wuzzy about the approaching darkness, he sets off in search of an adventure, hoping to assist with any trouble he may find. Along the way, he encounters Mrs. Littletail, who is looking for her daughter Susie. Uncle Wiggily agrees to help and eventually discovers Susie hidden near a stump, afraid of a bat that she believed might harm her. Understanding Susie's fear, Uncle Wiggily reassures her that bats are harmless and concocts a plan to distract the bat using a playfully recited Mother Goose verse. His scheme works, allowing him to safely escort Susie home. The bat, appreciative of the offered cake, assures that it never intended harm and confirms that Susie’s fear was unfounded, leaving both Susie and Uncle Wiggily relieved and content.
