"The Christmas Spruce Tree" follows a small spruce who listens as the proud oak, pine, and birch boast of their grand purposes — building ships, holding sails, warming homes. Too short to do any of these things, she grows increasingly sorrowful, even weeping tears that harden into drops of gum. When a boy finally chops her down and carries her home, she is dressed in popcorn, gilded nuts, and candles — and must wait alone in the dark before discovering, at last, exactly what she was made for.
