Did Jesus Say Take Up His Cross, Not His Teachings Or "Moral Code?" (Response to J. D. Greear)

SBC President J. D. Greear has been taking a lot of heat on Twitter lately, and maybe you’ve seen some of the fracas. Maybe you have thoughts on the fracas, or maybe you’re looking for some insight into how to best understand both what Pastor Greear said, and what Jesus actually said. That’s what I want to lay out for you, quickly, in this article and episode.

I’ll talk about what Greear said, and why I’m addressing this (no, I’m not going to turn into a polemicist).

Specifically, I will discuss:

  • Why so many Christians (including myself) have a problem with JD Greear’s tweet.
  • How this tweet fits in to a troubling trend and downgrade, including Greear’s recent comments on the Bible “whispering about sexual sin.”
  • Three inaccuracies in Greear’s tweet.
  • What Jesus actually said—and whether He did or did not say we should take up his teachings and His moral code (spoiler alert: Jesus did say we need to do that.
  • Why I understand what J. D. Greear is trying to do, but why he needs to be careful.
  • How J. D. Greear clarified his position in two subsequent tweets, and why this was actually very good.
  • Two major takeaways from this fiasco for Christians.
