FEATURING JOHN NICHOLS - The November 2nd election results in a handful of races around the country were seen as a warning sign for the Democratic Party. In Virginia, Democrat Terri McAuliffe lost to a Trump backed Republican Glenn Youngkin and in New Jersey, incumbent Governor Phil Murphy barely held on to his seat against a GOP challenger in a race that was expected to be a much easier win. Elsewhere, Republicans made inroads in smaller offices and on some school boards where the latest culture war over critical race theory is shaping up.

Days after the elections, House Democrats together with a handful of Republicans passed President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill, decoupling it from the Build Back Better bill. Half a dozen stalwart progressive Democrats voted no on the Infrastructure bill.
