These days it seems like everyone is awakening spiritually and there are plenty of teachers to help guide and empower you on your journey. It's useful to note there are different levels of awakening and depending on where you are, and what you want, some tools may or may not be helpful. The most common level is to awaken into your unique flow of life and free yourself from society's restrictions and norms. The second is to free yourself from personhood and realise you are life flow itself. As you can imagine, they are both paradigm shifts. The first one is where all the personal growth tools are helpful. The second one, self-empowerment and personal development can actually hinder growth and confuse you. Often when we face a thought storm or repetitive thought patterns we try to distract or run away from it. Turning to face the storm has an impact of slowing it down and taking the power away from the thoughts and back into our hands.
