This week a focus on Chris McGregor. McGregor was a South African jazz pianist, bandleader and composer born in Somerset West, South Africa. McGregor is perhaps best known for his foundation and leadership of The Blue Notes, a South African sextet that included collaborators Dudu Pukwana, Nikele Moyake, Louis Moholo, Johnny Dyani and Mongezi Feza. Equally as notable was McGregor's creation of the Brotherhood of Breath in 1969, which branched out from his work as The Blue Notes.

This one starts off fairly conventionally with the recent new band made up from ex Fall members, heads slightly north in the direction of Bury for a theremin toting outsider figure, heads west to Merseyside for something avant garde, and then goes completely of the rails for a while before heading in a shoegazey post-rock direction. The show is mostly about bassist Artie Roth who sent me a selection of his albums which lead me into an exploration of his past exploits with TuneTown, Richard Underhill, and Ernesto Cervini. There’s also couple of tracks from Gard Nilssen and a mammoth improvisation from Jeff Parker
