Dig to Fly with Karl Staib - Episode 198

Listen Later

Are you willing to dig deep so you can soar in your life? In this episode, Karl Staib joins host Ian Lobas to discuss turning our struggles into stepping stones. Karl is a seasoned speaker and author of the book Bring Gratitude.

He created the Dig to Fly method to help us get curious about our patterns of behavior and recognize that trauma can make us more resilient if we look at it the right way.

Karl and Ian look at the role of parents in teaching their kids resilience, because, let’s face it, there’s going to be a level of trauma at some point in their lives. They also discuss the stories we tell ourselves and our parents’ influence on the development of these stories.

The conversation uncovers the steps we can take to training our minds to see any obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow from the situation. Karl has realized that he can be a more compassionate person by refusing to act on his initial anger response, staring it in the face instead of running from it as he used to do. As a result, he’s happier now than he was in his twenties.

A self-confessed cynic at heart, Karl has tested his Dig to Fly method on himself and found it to work so well that he’s eager to share it with everyone. This episode offers the perfect platform for that.

Karl Staib’s Dig to Fly Method

  1. Level set - if you have a struggle, on a scale of 1-10 rate how intense this struggle is, to create some emotional distance and a clear perspective.
  2. Ask yourself why the thing you’re struggling with is so difficult for you. Also, consider why you’re acting this way. Keep digging deeper as you continue to ask yourself why you are feeling this way.
  3. What is your expectation? - Does your outlook on life match what you want or need?
  4. What am you grateful for? Use gratitude as your emotional switch - in other words, you start being grateful for your struggles.\
  5. What is the opportunity? - Everything happening in our life is a chance to learn and grow
