तेनाली रामा का जन्म आँध्रप्रदेश के एक ब्राहमण परिवार में हुआ था. उनके पिता गरालपति रमैया रामलिंगेस्वर स्वामी मंदिर में पुरोहित थे. कहते हैं तेनाली रामा के बचपन में ही इनके पिता का निधन हो गया था. जिसके बाद इनकी माता इन्हें लेकर तेनाली नगर अपने भाई के पास चली गयीं. तेनाली रामा के बचपन का नाम रामकृष्ण था और तेनाली नगर में इनके मामा के यहाँ इनका पालन – पोषण होने की वजह से ये तेनाली रामकृष्ण के नाम से विख्यात हुए.
